As a tutor working in New Oriental, an agency that provides SAT test preparation services, I hear this sort of complain all the time. I have seen tons and tons of my students cannot get into their dream schools simply because of their SAT score is not high enough to persuade the admission officers that they are competent enough to get in. However, those people are all brilliant and intelligent students who will become experts in their study field. In other words, as colleges evaluate every applicant by using the same standard and require every applicant to do the same thing, they focus more on conformity. Conformity, however, is perhaps the worst word in western culture. As western culture focuses more on individuality rather than conformity, colleges should ask their applicants to submit individual and unique application materials. For instance, if applicants are allowed to record their own video in the admission process, applicant can have a better chance of showing the admission officers what he or she is good at, which cannot be easily expressed by exam scores. Therefore, colleges are able to discover more about each individual applicant and recruit best possible
