Your final project for this course will be a research paper of 1500 words with a minimum of four sources. We’ll have a library orientation session on October 28 that will assist you in learning how to do academic research on a literary topic. You will choose any text (or two texts), either poetry or short fiction, that we have read over the course of the semester for your topic. I recommend you take one of three approaches that I will be going over with you in class: formalist (focusing on the text’s structure and literary devices), theoretical (reading the text for issues of gender, race, class, psychology, etc.), or contextual (focusing on the text’s historical, cultural, and social context).…

I think that "The Cask Of Amontillado" is believable because it seems like Montresor is fed up with Fortunato. Poe also leads us to believe that Fortunato is foolish enough to follow Montresor into the dark catacombs to get to the amontillado that he is an expert on. The story is a dark tale of a presumably insane man who suffers from, according to him, "the thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as I best could"(75). Montresor has never told us exactly what Fortunato had done to him to make him so frustrated. We can only assume that it had to be many things that added up over a period of time.…

    1) Laertes and Hamlet both have different approaches to revenge. Laertes basically says that he will not be messed with and just wants to get to the point of the revenge, and uses a lot of religious language to deal with the problem. He also mentions how he doesn’t care what happens to him after he sets revenge, he doesn’t care what’s right and what’s wrong and doesn’t want to hear anything but his own views on the story and especially not Hamlet’s. However hamlet uses a lot of aggression in his speech, he is more natural at plotting revenge and just wants to stay loyal to his father after swearing on an oath; however hamlet doesn’t want to endanger any of his friends in the mission to plot revenge which contrasts with Laertes revenge. Laertes doesn’t care what happens as long as he gets what he wants, whereas Hamlet is actually loyal to his friends as well as his father. Hamlet see’s all the pain that Claudius has caused and says that he’s killed his king so now Hamlet wants to sit and plot revenge to kill him. Laertes just wants to go out and set revenge whereas Hamlet takes things into consideration and plots it.…

For this project you will write a narrative essay about a significant moment of your life using the literary strategies of plot, character, and setting. This should be a moment when you learned something important about yourself or someone else, or about life. You will develop your story through the use of contraries, creating tension that moves the story forward and gives it significance. You can discuss the importance of your story explicitly, perhaps as a revelation, or you can imply it. Either way, it should be clear that you have contemplated the significance of the event and have pushed your thinking past the obvious, surface-level impact. The focus of your narrative should be “The Moment,” with only enough background to convey its understanding to the reader.…
