Diversity Worksheet
Answer each question in 50 to 150 words. Provide citations for all the sources you use.
1. What is diversity? Why is diversity valued?
In my opinion, diversity is being different in numerous categories. A few categories could be how you look, your beliefs, or your ethnicity. “Diversity is used broadly to refer to many demographic variables, including, but not limited to, race, religion, color, gender, national origin, disability, sexual orientation, age, education, geographic origin, and skill characteristics.” Retrieved from www.doi.gov
Diversity is valued by helping others experience different thinking processes from looking at it in another perspective. It can lead to maturity and growth in a world together, or it can lead to violence and hate. In order for diversity to be valued, we must work together for the good of our society.
2. What is ethnocentrism? In what ways can ethnocentrism be detrimental to a society?
After researching and reading information regarding ethnocentrism, my definition or example of ethnocentrism seems to be someone that is biased and choosy with one group over others.

3. Define emigration and immigration.
“Emigration is someone who leaves a country to settle in another county.” (Schaefer, R, 2012) Immigration is someone who comes into a new country as a permanent resident. (Schaefer, R, 2012)
An example of emigration in my opinion would be somewhat like birds that migrate from one area to the other depending on the season, except it is in another country with people. People from all over the country come as immigrants, and have to apply for visa to become permanent residents.
4. What are some of the ways groups of people are identified?
Groups of people can be identified by a numerous of things. In today’s society, groups of people are identified by their race, religion, physical appearances, education, abilities and talents, their environment, the type of vehicles they drive. In my opinion, it seems like material things are what really matters on identifying groups of people in the society we live in today. People form their clicks based off assumptions and rumors, and that is how most people are categorized.
5. Why do people label and group other people?
Some people feel the need to be accepted and conform, so they tend to label and group others into the category they see the person best fits into. Depending on a person’s experience, they will label and group someone whether it was a good or bad experience. From my own experiences, I label and group people. I give people a chance, regardless of what I have heard. By giving them a chance, it allows me to put them in my own category that is based off of what they have presented themselves to be to me, based on their character and personality.
6. Define culture. Is culture limited to racial and ethnic backgrounds? Explain.
My definition of culture would be each generation that evolves and brings something different into society than other groups of generation. “Culture is defined as the shared patterns of behaviors and interactions, cognitive constructs, and affective understanding that are learned through a process of socialization. Culture is not limited to racial and ethnic backgrounds. It could be the type of clothing you wear, you location of living, and just about anything, but it is not based on your color.

Importantly, there are also three levels of ethnocentrism: a positive one, a negative one, and an extreme negative one.
