* Select 1 racial group from the list below:

* African American * Asian American * Arab American * Hispanic American/Latino * White/Caucasian

* Write a 150- to 300-word summary of the economic, social, and political standings of that group. Use additional resources if necessary, from the University Library or your textbooks. Provide citations for all the sources you use. Based on a 2000 Census, Income for whites are between $25,000-$30,000. Income for Hispanics is less than $15,000. Income for blacks is $20,000-$25,000. According to Thomas Segrone, a black family earning $50,000 in income is less likely to receive an inheritance, own their own home, and more likely to have more debt than a white family making the same income. Middle income black families are more likely to have lived in poverty in the past than white families of the middle class. Blacks have been more likely to live in poverty, crime and receive lower health care. African Americans were known to be social with their creations and inventions way before it was known. Their skills and inventions were passed on. They played roles with politics as well. After the civil war, blacks considered themselves republicans. It was the republicans along with Abraham Lincoln that started the abolitionists. * Is inequality shortening your life span? Washington Monthly.Jan/Feb2013, vol45Issue1/2 p 34-38.5p

Part II

Answer the following in 50 to 150 words each. Provide citations for all the sources you use.

What is racism? In what ways does racism affect diversity? Racism according toen.wikipedia.org/wiki/racism is defined as practices, views, practices and actions reflecting the belief that humanity is divided into distinct biological groups called races. It states that members of a certain race share certain attributes which make that group as a whole less desirable, more desirable, superior, or inferior. Racism affect diversity because diversity means being different or varied. Some people portray racism because of other’s diversity. There are plenty of people disliked for their different style, different color, or the way they act.

How do racial groups interact in contemporary America? Are interactions positive, negative, or neutral? Support your response using proper citations. In my opinion, racial groups interact in contemporary America way better than it was years ago. I think a lot has changed throughout the generations, making interaction acceptable. Everyone may not all get along but there has been a significant change with time. I think that interactions are neutral. You cannot force people to interact; it’s a choice within them. There has been progression and hopefully with time, we’ll see more progress.

Are there existing social inequities based on race? Why or why not? I would say that there still are social inequities based on race. You see it in the workforce, on the news and right around you every day. Unfortunately this is a problem that has gotten better, but it still exists. We see people getting promotions not based on their qualifications, people getting jobs because of who they know, etc.

What do you believe to be the causes of racial prejudice and discrimination in today’s society? I believe values that are instilled in people are causes of racial prejudice and discrimination in today’s society. When you are young, you do what you see and hear. A lot is instilled in you and you intake a lot in when you are a child. If you see hate as a child, you will grow up with that same hate. If your parents or grandparents hate a person because of their skin color, 9 times out of 10 you will dislike people of that skin tone as well.

    Geographically Asian American make up less than 100,000 throughout the majority of the U.S. California, and New York make up the majority by having 1.3 million or more, next TX, IL, and NJ have 500-900,000, and 200-499,000 in WA, MI, PA, VA, GA, and FL. Socially they receive very little media notice like the tens of thousands that was displaced by Hurricane Katrina. Known as the model minority, because of the prejudice and discrimination they have experienced, they have succeeded, economically, socially, and educationally without resorting to political or violent confrontation with the Whites. They ceased to be the subordinate group, and no longer disadvantage. Asian Americans have been active political through collective action and recent through seeking elective office. They continue to embrace both their unique identity as well as border Pan-Asian identity. South East Asians present in the U.S. are from waves of refugees, and just disperse in to larger populations. There are many issues that we face as humans in the societies that we live in. Income inequality is a touchy subject for some. For most though, it’s a subject that needs to be discussed in our society today. Minority households in my opinion seem to suffer more from income inequality than Whites. We should all want to know what the problem is. I don’t think it’s because whites have all the better paying jobs than minority workers. From my understanding of information gathered women and minorities continue to bring home less than white men because of the way income inequality has spread through many communities. One of the major issues that can possibly impact the future and the behaviors of an individual is income inequality. What is income…
