Ethan Frome Essay
“His heart was bound with cords which an unseen hand was tightening with every tick of the clock.” (96) In Edith Wharton’s novel Ethan Frome, the main character named Ethan Frome finds himself trying to find the courage to commit to personal fulfillment or to his marital duty. Ethan’s conflict is the theme of this novel, personal inclination versus group obligations. When Ethan decides to marry his distant cousin, Zeena, his life starts a journey on a long and dreadful road, until he meets Zeena’s cousin, Mattie. Zeena and Mattie are completely different characters, while Zeena has deathly and sickly qualities; Mattie is filled with beauty and energy. Wharton makes is obvious as to who Ethan would rather be with. When Ethan looks at Mattie he believes she looks “taller, fuller, more womanly in shape and motion.” (53) He quickly falls deeply in love with Mattie and soon starts to resent Zeena. Even though he would rather be with Mattie, his marital duty with Zeena prevents him from having the ability to show his affection toward Mattie. Ethan and Mattie’s relationship is built within Zeena’s shadow. Even when Zeena goes on a trip to the doctor, her presence still looms between the two lovers, in the form of their cat. Zeena’s pickle dish represents the relationship between Ethan and his wife, the cat breaks the dish, and Ethan decides to hide away the pieces. Over all, this symbolizes that although their marriage appears unbroken, even the slightest disturbance may cause it to fall apart. When Ethan decides he wants to elope with Mattie he realizes that he cannot betray the marital commitment he has already made with his wife. Ethan’s ambition and desire were never strong enough for him to fulfill his dream of becoming an engineer or moving into the town, his failure foreshadows his inability to be with Mattie. Ethan is as frozen as Starkfield and finds it difficult to express himself, this characteristic causes him to be unable to turn his life around and settles with daydreaming and fantasizing.

    1. Ethan Frome – Ethan, the head of the Frome household, is first seen by the narrator to be a stiff/stern man who looks as if he is quite saddened. Ethan carries a limp and bears a scar on his face. As the narrator learns about Ethan’s past through various stories, he sees that young Ethan is quite the antithesis of the old Ethan. This young Ethan is portrayed as a man full of intelligence, strength, and optimism. Though he has an engineering degree and a healthy physique – which is widely sought for at the time of the novel – Ethan is stuck in Starkfield because of his sick…

The bleak, snow filled landscape, is a factor in many internal conflicts. The wintry imagery is so overwhelming and oppressive, as snow, ice, and cold are constantly being used to describe the setting. One characteristic of Ethan is that he is indecisive. Throughout the book, he will begin to attempt what he wants, but will not follow through with it. This can be tied back to the bleak and oppressive setting, in which Ethan’s desires are suppressed, due to the fact that the coldness and stark features of the town drain the energy out of people, including Ethan. This constant conflict between what he wants, versus what he believe is ethical or possible, is one example of an internal conflict.…

In Ethan Frome, Wharton uses symbols and archetypes to create Ethan's anguish to his moral obligation to his wife Zeena which keeps him from his true love, Mattie. His moral prison is established with the headstone of another Ethan Frome and his wife that bores that they "dwelled together in peace for fifty years," which interests Ethan (Frome 66). Later on, his own neighbors "don't see there's much difference between the Fromes up at the farm and the Fromes down in the graveyard" (Frome 140). The symbol of "the Fromes down in the graveyard" establishes Ethan's similarities to the dead illustrating his moral obligation to Zeena for eternity (Frome 140). When Ethan feels Zeena's presence, coincidently Zeena's grey cat "[elongates] its body in the direction of the milk-jug, which stood between Ethan and Mattie" (Frome 69).The cat then tries an unobserved retreat and "[backs] into the red pickle-dish, which [falls] on the floor with a crash" (Frome 69). The color archetypes of ‘red' establish Ethan and Mattie's love while the ‘grey' cat establishes Zeena who breaks their love, the dish. Ethan is always besieged by Zeena even when lacking her presence. He…

Both of Mattie’s parents had died, so she came to live with the Fromes. She became a caretaker of the house and Zeena. About a year into staying with the Fromes, Zeena decided to send Mattie away since she suspected that Mattie and her husband were having an affair. Ethan was extremely upset because Mattie did not have anywhere to go. Zeena won the argument, and Mattie was sent away. Ethan took Mattie back to the station where they confessed their love for each other. Mattie made a bold statement by saying, “we’d never have to leave each other any more” (Wharton 143). The two were standing by a coasting hill, and at the bottom of the hill was an enormous elm tree. Mattie had the idea to sled right into the tree so the two could truly be together forever. Ethan went along with the idea, but the couple failed with their plan. Mattie needed the Fromes, but she needed Ethan to love her back. Ethan gave her the feeling of rebellion and…

Some decisions have an everlasting effect on one's life. Ethan Frome, the protagonist in Edith Wharton's Ethan Frome, is tormented by his passionate love for Mattie Silver, but is morally shackled to Zeena by the sacred bonds of marriage. After years of harsh life with his wife in the dreary town of Starkefield, Ethan comes to believe that his greatest chance at a happy life is with Mattie Silver, a cousin of Zeena, who has come to live with him. However, in the end Mattie's other side, one which is extraordinarily similar to Zeena's attitude, comes to light, after a thwarted suicide attempt. In Ethan Frome, Edith Wharton makes an ironic comment on the choices present in an impoverished world by presenting contrasting images to describe Zeena Frome and Mattie Silver, yet also presenting details which make them seem alike.…

Although Frome’s actions seem to contain merit, his vacuity is what causes him to live in constant moral isolation. The author foreshadows Ethan’s fate with an allusion to a grave: “SACRED TO THE MEMORY OF ETHAN FROME AND ENDURANCE HIS WIFE…” (Wharton 70). This depicts Frome’s tragic end to a great extent, because he does not die a physical death, but rather a mental demise. Frome’s poor judgement of allowing Mattie to convince him to commit suicide resulted in him being trapped in moral isolation. Furthermore, it resulted in Mattie becoming paralyzed, while Zeena was left to tend to both individuals for the rest of their lives. Frome was left to endure the consequences of his plight. He was also left with a resentful Mattie, who realized that Frome had truly destroyed her. Frome was a “prisoner for life” (Wharton 117) and would continue to be tormented by the constant reminder of his failure and lack of…
