When first introduced, Zeena was shown as a lively, caring, young woman who very easily captured the heart of Ethan Frome. She cared for him and the household while his parents were ill. When winter came and his parents had passed away, Ethan asked Zeena to stay and take care of him. Very hesitantly she…
Ethan’s mind is being pulled in two directions and he battles between his love for Mattie and his duty to his wife. When Ethan’s mother got sick, Zeena came to help take care of her. Ethan like the feeling of companionship with someone, so when his…
Ethan’s introverted personality, as Mrs. Hale says is a result of Mattie and Zeena’s relationship that consists of uneasy feelings amongst the both of them. She says that one can see how it truly affects Ethan by his facial expressions, they show how he is feeling and it is upsetting. Because they have disagreements so frequently, Ethan does not feel that he can share his feelings with either of them. This makes him bottle up his emotions inside that he cannot…

2. Zeena’s arrival affects Ethan because it made him feel less lonely. Fearing the return of his loneliness when his mother died, Ethan asked Zeena to marry him.…
Whenever Mattie and Ethan are together and around Zeena at the same time, things get a little awkward. Both Ethan and Mattie try to hide their feelings and love toward one another while Zeena is around. If Ethan was truly altruistic, he would have told Zeena that he does not love her anymore, and that he loves Mattie. Ethan does not do so. Instead, he hides his love for Mattie around Zeena. Zeena slowly begins to recognize signs, and believe, that Ethan gives more attention to Mattie and not herself. Therefore, Zeena wants Mattie to be leave their house, and hire someone else. When Ethan fights for Mattie to stay, it truly showed that Ethan did not care what Zeena thought about Mattis. All Ethan cared about was to persuade Zeena that they needed to keep Mattie around. That was also an example showing Ethan is selfish and only cares about what he…
I like the question, but I think this can be two questions. First I am going to answer the how then the what. He was trapped because he had to quit college to take care of his father’s work. Then soon after his father died, he was left to tend to his mother that got sick. The weather trapped him into marrying Zeena. In the book it says “and before he knew what he was doing, he had asked her to stay there with him. He had often thought since that it would not have happened if his mother had died in the spring instead of winter.” Later in the book he is trapped again. Mattie is being forced to leave and Ethan doesn’t like this. He is in his study alone thinking about leaving Zeena for Mattie. He starts to write a letter to Zeena, but here is where the trapped part comes in. He knows if he does leave, she being sick can’t take care of the mill. Thus the people in town will not have…
Ethan and Mattie wanted to run away and be together in the first place but were not able to. Ethan was trapped from the start and this was mentioned when the narrator said, “Sickness and trouble: that’s what Ethan’s had his plate full up with, ever since the very first helping”(Wharton 6). This was also again mentioned when Ethan mentioned that his ancestors were buried on his property, foreshadowing that he could never leave. When Mattie became paralyzed and Ethan was crippled they had to live with Zeena which condemned them not only to the home but to the town. They were freed in a way because Zeena wanted Mattie to leave. But not Ethan and Zeena can be together although Zeena might not approve of it. This presented Ethan with the same moral dilemma throughout the story. Whether he should follow his heart and his dreams, which is leaving and being with Mattie. Or do right by his wife and move on from Mattie. Mattie becomes paralyzed and fully reliant on Zeena and Ethan for help, so no matter where she goes she is condemned. The only upside is that she gets to stay with…
Ethan’s lack of agency, the ability to act is first evident at the beginning of the novel. He is unable to continue on his career path to become an engineer because he must stay behind and care for his parents. His misery at the situation is obvious. It was as if he carried the pain of his life along with him. “ A lameness checking each step like the jerk of a chain. There was something bleak and unapproachable in his face, and he was so stiffened and grizzled that I took him for an old man and was surprised to hear that he was not more then fifty-two” (Wharton 3). Ethan was unable to exceed his moral obligations and instead he was forced to remain in Starkfield. “Most of the smart ones get away. But if that were the case, how could any combination of obstacles have hindered the flight of a man like Ethan Frome” (Wharton 7)? It was evident to all members of that Starkfield community that Ethan’s potential went above and beyond what could be offered for him in Starkfield. But once again Ethan was unable to determine where his loyalty lied, to himself. Ethan quickly ended his schooling and went to run the family farm and mill because he felt that it was his responsibility. In an unsuccessful attempt to escape silence, isolation, and loneliness Ethan proposes to the nurse of his sick mother…
In regards to interest into Ethan Frome, they both had some but it was not black and white in any means. Zeena shows a miniscule amount of interest in the beginning of the novel, as she cares more for her own complications when she left Ethan and Mattie alone so for her benefit. Her lack of interest contrasts with Mattie’s sudden lust into Ethan Frome. Mattie and Ethan Frome share an attraction for each other while Ethan Frome is not attracted by Zeena any longer. She reacts with jealousy which can be seen as a form of interest in her spouse but it is mostly just out of pure…
Wharton uses infidelity to show symbolism in Ethan's life. Ethan and Zeena’s marriage is in shambles. Zeena has stopped trying and when she becomes a trouble in Ethan's life. “Zeena herself, from an oppressive reality, had faded into an insubstantial shade. All his life was lived in the sight and sound of Mattie Silver, and he could no longer conceive of its being otherwise” (Wharton 410). Once Ethan realized his feeling for Mattie he…
One way Ethan Frome shows he’s unselfish is when he allows the narrator to stay at his house during the violent snowstorm. They meet each other at the post office, while they’re both working and they start talking. They realize how severe the storm is and Ethan Frome offers his household for the narrator to stay at. At first, the narrator denies the offer, but Ethan insists. He says, “ Nor you neither. There’s been about enough of this for anybody.” (18) Ethan’s saying to the narrator that there’s no reason for anyone to be out in a storm like this. The narrator argues with Ethan and says he can keep going, but Ethan persuades him to stay at his house. Ethan shows his kindness by taking care of the narrator and allowing him to be a guest in his home. Another way Ethan shows he is unselfish is when he leaves college to take care of the farm and his mother after the death of his father. Ethan wants to become an engineer, but he gives up his dream to run the farm and help his mother in this time of sorrow. He knows his mother is upset, so he puts her needs and the farm’s before his. The narrator says, “Left alone, after his father’s accident, to carry the burden of farm and mill, and when his mother fell ill.” (41) This quote shows that Ethan left college to care for other things beside himself. This demonstrates that Ethan is unselfish because he gives up his…
With flashbacks, Ethan recalls the time when he married his wife Zeena. The narrator says, “When they married it was agreed that, as soon as he could straighten out the difficulties resulting from Mrs. Frome’s long illness, they would sell the farm and saw-mill and try their luck in a large town… where there are lectures and big libraries and ‘fellows doing things’” (Wharton 38). Ethan has decided that while being away from Starkfield, he would become an engineer, a profession he has always wanted to be. This, along with his desire to see the world, adds to his desire to leave his hometown. The problem is that after waiting for the farm to be sold, Zeena develops hypochondria, an obsession of having a serious medical condition. This, in turns, makes Ethan’s wish to move to a larger town and become an engineer impractical. When Jung says that “Loneliness does not come from having no people around you, but from being unable to communicate the things that seem important to you,” he is suggesting that loneliness is caused by an unhealthy relationship, one without any romantic attachment. This lack of emotional bond between the couple captures Ethan’s loneliness. For example, Ethan does not take the initiative to confront his wife about his ambitions in life, something that he holds great importance to. If Ethan is not lonely, he would have no trouble explaining to Zeena about what seems important to him. However, the fact that Ethan does not have someone who understands his desire to meet new people and start life anew fulfills the requirement as to what it means to be…
Marx and Engels are against private property and want to abolish the class system and the exploitation relationship between bourgeoisie and proletariat from the DL, and to achieve the ideal communist society that people have the idea of shared property. They believe the DL is what creates the division of people into social classes and is a result of the subordination of one over another through ownership. The DL, the class system, and the privatization of private property are abolished in a communist society that is the collective ownership of surplus, so the communism is the only way to achieve equality. People have freedom to do what they are pleased without forces from ruling class when the DL is abolished, which is an utopian ideal that…
The Marxist view of society is built on the theory that the ruling class holds power over the subject class through the capitalist system. Without this domination, capitalism cannot survive, and so every institution within society serves to support it. The most effective way to uphold the power of the ruling class is not through physical force, which provokes resistance and risks overthrow and revolution. Instead, it is through the ruling class ideology, which causes people to accept the injustice in their hearts and minds, and therefore prevents any challenge to the capitalist system. Louis Althusser, a French Marxist, believed that the ruling class ideology is vital to capitalist society, because it causes people to accept their place in society. He said that in the past, the church was the main institution for ideological control, but with the decline of religious influence, it is now the main function of the education system to transmit it to the next generation. However, in order…
