children´s lives. For young adults, those fairy tale characters give away to darker characters and more realistic situations. However, what do they all have in common? They live in short stories. Two stories that are interesting are ¨Thank you Ma'am¨ by Langston Hughes and ¨The Sniper¨ by Liam O ´Flaherty. Both center around young boys who are having hard times in life. Roger in ¨Thank you Ma'am¨ tries stealing Mrs. Louella Bates purse. The sniper is fighting in the war for others. While there are some obvious similarities, both authors approach these stories, specifically the characters, tone and point of view, in different ways.
The main characters of both stories are similar because they both take risks. The author doesn’t directly explain Rogers life, So the reader must infer it through his actions. For example, roger tries to steal Mrs. Bates purse about ¨11 at night¨, Roger goes for the risk of stealing her purse. A boy who comes from a responsible family doesn´t go around stealing peoples purses. Similarly, the Sniper is smoking a cigarette in the middle of war "Placing a cigarette between his lips, he struck a match, inhaled the smoke hurriedly and put out the light" (Flaherty). In "Thank you M'am" the point of view is third person omniscient. In the story it says "There's nobody home at my house." (Hughes). Roger explains how he's lonely at home. Mrs.Luella feels bad for the boy, she changed the subject to not make him feel bad. In "The Sniper" the point of view is third person limited. In the story it says " Then round the corner of a side street came an old women. her head covered by a tattered shawl. she began to talk to the men in the torrent of the a car." With this piece of the story we know the narrtor only knows about the sniper.
