Ethical Decision Reflection
Ethical Decision Reflection

An ethical decision I had to make in my professional life was when I was working at a convenience store. I had a co-worker that always stole from the store. She stole anything that she needed, whether it was candy or a quart of oil. This was not a once in a while thing. She did it whenever she needed anything. There were many factors to consider. One of them being was she ever going to get caught? Or should I tell someone before she gets caught? Another one being should I just let her continue to do it and hope that she did get caught? There were so many different factors to consider, it was hard to make a decision. I had many values to consider as well. I enjoyed my job and what I did. If things were coming up missing on my shift they might suspect me of doing the stealing. Then, I could get fired, and I had a family to provide for. I also valued what they thought of me and my part in the community. If I had gotten blamed for stealing then those values would mean nothing. So, my decision was to turn her in. There were many people impacted by my decision. The owner was impacted because it was his merchandise that was being stolen and that is a lost profit for him. I was impacted because it was also my job on the line if someone wasn’t caught and numbers were not adding up right at the end of the night or during an inventory. She was impacted by my decision because she lost her job and a good reference for future employment. The outcome of my decision was that I was stilled employed and she wasn’t. I hated to see her lose her job because she had been there for many years. But, it was the right decision, and I was glad I did

My personal ethical lens is rights and responsibilities and relationship lens. This indicates that I use my reasoning skills to determine both the universal rules that each person should follow and the processes that will assure fairness and justice for all in the community. My strength is to know what to do and do it. Once it is said that I will do something or care for someone, that is what I do. Loyalty and consistency is valued. My weakness is the risk of being an autocratic. An autocratic is a person that has everyone do it their way and does not negotiate ro change it once their mind is made up. According to the ethical lens inventory the belief that motive justifies methods or overconfidence in process is my blind spot. The process is trusted too much even though the outcome is not promised to be what it should be. It states sometimes I am so focused on the good motive that I don’t see the problems with the method, causing unintentional upset and pain. Ethical lens inventory states that temperance and justice is my classic values. This means that I value individual balance and restraint in the desire for pleasure as you seek to satisfy my duties. I value the social balance achieved through loyalty and consistency in dealings among members of the community, especially those without power. The definition of ethical behavior is fulfilling duties fairly. Defined as an ethical person as one who fulfills their duties and does the right thing as fully-responsible adult. Everyone in the community is given the chance to succeed, especially those without power. My personal ethical lens may direct my academic behavior into the positives. If all is true as the ethical lens states then when I set my mind to a project, being the discussion questions or an assignment, I fulfill those tasks. Doing this will get everything in on time. My ethical lens influences my critical thinking knowing that I have to think things through, I ask questions when need be. No matter if it is…

Shoplifting seems like a victimless crime, but the damages caused are far from minor. I myself was recently caught shoplifting, and now I need to pay for the consequences of my crime. There are many reasons why people shoplift, it can be a obsessive compulsion disorder (OCD) all the way to a dare from a friend, either way Shoplifting does not only affect the individual, but it also affects the community, the retailer, and the consumer.…

There were many moral lessons she had to learn the hard way, such as the time she stole an outfit from a high-end department store. Her mother discovered her misdeed, took her back to the store and forced her to tell the store manager what she had done. The store manager informed her that she was never allowed back in the store and other than that did not impose any further punishment. Stephanie’s mother was not satisfied with that outcome. Knowing that she had most likely not learned her lesson, her mother made her do chores around the house at minimum wage until she paid off her debt. Although it took several weeks, she learned a very valuable lesson. Stephanie never stole…

Should Rosa follow this way of thinking, she would not take the money. While the money would help her family, there is a risk that the embezzling will be discovered. If that happens, there is nothing stopping Rosa from losing her job, going to jail, and no longer being able to support her family. Even if the risk is small, it is still there. It would lead to a lot of suffering for her and her family, and the reward does not outweigh the suffering that could turn up. So now the next question is should she turn in Jane? The ‘energy corporation that nets billions of dollars annually,’ will not miss the several thousand dollars that Jane is taking, and with the environmental charity depending on the money, the good far outweighs the bad. At this point, even if the embezzling is found out, Jane will take most, if not all, of the punishment, and Rosa will be able to say that she missed the small amount. She may receive some punishment, but not enough to lead to an arrest. Through this course of action, I believe that she will produce the most good, without taking much risk…

We all end up at a point where we have to respond to an issue positively. That is possible when a good amount of experience to certain situations is attained. “The creed which accepts as the foundation of morals 'utility' or the 'greatest happiness principle' holds that actions are right in proportion as they tend to promote happiness; wrong as they tend to produce the reverse of happiness” - John Stuart Mill. This particular quote refers to the utilitarian approach which states that in all our actions we must always strive to produce the greatest possible balance of good or evil. The utilitarian approach deals with consequences. It tries both to increase the good done and to reduce the harm done. Immanuel Kant was an important component in modern philosophy. He combined together early modern rationalism and empiricism and continues to practice an important influence today in ethics. He disputes that the human understanding is the source of the general laws of nature that structure all our experience and that human reason gives itself the moral law, which is our basis for belief in God, freedom, and immortality. “Act in such a way that you always treat humanity whether in your own person or in the person of any other, never simply as a means but always at the same time as an end”- Immanuel Kant. In this particular quote Kant gives us a message to treat people with respect and never get them to believe something that doesn't exist. Carol Gilligan maintains that the morality of males is different from that of females. Males view rules and principles as necessary to proceed in a practice (a game, an art, a science, the making and sustaining of a community). Females, on the other hand, give fundamental importance to the consistency of relationships with other people. Gilligan describes male morality as a morality of principles…
