Ethan seemed moral in the beginning, but slowly got out of it by cheating on his wife with her cousin, Mattie. He seemed to spend as much time with her as possible, and got close to her whenever he had the opportunity to do so.
Zenobia showed to be sickly more frequently throughout the years she spent married to Ethan. She went out for days at times, just to go to various doctors. He gave her enough by providing the money she needed (among other human necessities), yet never more than that. Women are classified as girls, because they were meant for all around housework (cooking, cleaning, washing, etc). Without her husband, she can not make any profit to afford a house for herself. This is where his morals came in to prevent abandonment. Another problem arose with both Ethan’s parents dying early on.
Ethan proved a morally inadequate man, though never a constant in his life. It all started with the death of his parents. After the incident, he moved back to Starkfield and had later on met Zeena. The death of Ethan’s parents affected him in a way where he couldn’t bare the thought of loneliness Ethan’s mood would have differed if his mother had not died in winter. After marrying Zeena, he couldn’t move back to the big city to become an engineer because he had to take care of her. For all of his life, he had lived in the sight and sound of Mattie Silver, and he could no longer conceive of its being otherwise” (1.32). Zenobia had oppressed Ethan, which caused him to develop a disliking towards her, and to stop seeing her as a person. Ethan disfavors hurting people but instead he hurt Zeena anyway. Him expressing dishonesty and cheating on her with Mattie had downgraded his role as a man, husband, and as a person. Little mistakes and actions had then started to develop, spreading the problem to become even worse.
“You wanted to make the supper-table pretty; and you waited till my back was turned, and took the thing I set the most store by of anything I’ve got-” (7.126). Here, in a way, Zanobia called Ethan out on his actions. It originally started as Mattie’s fault for leaving out the plate (lead to the cat to hit against it), having the couple to argue about how things have changed since she’s arrived. Ethan at first, meekly defends Mattie and thinks about going off on Zeena, but decides against it. Ethan has the right to defend Mattie, but what he wanted to do or say is not appropriate, especially in front of his
