The dilemma deals with both ethical and legal issues, it involves a professional nurse by the name of Mr. Ying and one of his elderly patients, who is Mr. Smith. In an attempt to appreciate the caring and hardworking attributes of his nurse friend; Mr. Smith felt he should leave all his assets to Ying. However, due to the
ethical issues in the nursing profession in Canada; Ying refused the offers and would rather prefer if these assets go to charity homes instead.
In assessing the ethical aspect of the dilemma; Mr. Smith has the freedom to exercise his autonomy by offering his assets to Ying. However, Ying acted professionally by engaging one of Ontario codes of ethics i.e. practicing the principle of veracity which relates to the universal virtue of telling the truth that as a nurse in Ontario; he cannot accept such offers from any of his patients and clients no matter how cordial their relationship is (Ethic and Issues in Contemporary Nurse). What Ying did is refers to as moral value of truth telling. He is being truthful, objective and honest. These moral values are important attributes expected of nurses in Canada to possess in dealing with their clients and handling ethical issues within the public health system.
