There are four issues that can affect the health of the elderly: lack of resources; scarcity of providers; financial barriers; and cultural barriers and biases; all of which can spark ethical debates within the healthcare community. In the situation where there is a lack of resources a nurse has to determine which patient to take care of. The nurse can use the resources to take care of a young child that is battling cancer or he can take care of an elderly that is battling cancer as well with the resources. There is no ethical or logical reasoning to who would receive the treatment. Unfortunately the young child would more likely receive the treatment over the member of the elderly. Ethics guides end-of-life decisions. End-of-life decisions are difficult from all standpoints; often the family has a very different viewpoint than the medical staff.
