The SEN (Special Educational Needs) Code of Practice 2001 is derived from the Disability and Discrimination Act, and is built on the principle that, as far as is foreseeable, pupils with SEN should be educated in mainstream facilities. Schools and local authorities are therefore required to take a ‘graduated’ approach to SEN, with attention being on prevention rather than adversity and this Code of Practice provides practical advice in doing this.…
Garret F. was a young man that had an accident as a young child that left him paralyzed and requiring a wheelchair for mobility and also physical care support during the day while at school. Garret’s parents were asking that the school system provide someone to assist Garret with ventilation services during his time in school. This assistance was not necessarily required to be done by a medical professional, in the past Garret’s teenage aunt completed those tasks and was not a medical professional. The School District did not want to comply with the request from Garret’s parents due to the cost that would arise from the salary for the caregiver. Garret’s parents took the School District to court and the School District fought the case all the way to the United States Supreme Court. (Cedar Rapids Community School District v. Garret F., 1999)…

For my reflective assignment I will be writing about a period in my recent experience as a substitute teacher in the SCCPSS system, this was before I entered graduate school this past school year I worked as a, essentially every day from pre-k to high school grades and during this time I gain great experiences and learned how to communicate to learners from all walks of life. During my time as a sub I was able to work as paraprofessional in a special education classroom, there was a student who couldn’t regulate his emotional conduct and he would act out, he begin tossing things, and if he would run out of the room an fight with his brother. This type of behavior would just appear erratically through the weeks and I…
Bob was a machinist with a large company. His job was a physical one, which required some lifting. In June of 2002 he and another man lifted a particularly heavy piece of machinery onto a workbench. Bob mentioned that he had felt his back “crack”, but finished his shift. The next day he called in sick to work and went to a Doctor. After an extended period of time off, his Doctor told Bob that he could not continue with his present occupation as he had a permanent back injury. After many meetings with a back- to -work case worker and other professionals, it was decided to send Bob back to school for a two year program that he professed interest in, and that he could do even with his back injury. Because his injury had happened at work, it was decided that he would receive a living allowance, all his tuition and school supplies would be compensated, and any medical expenses would be paid.…

There is not a better job than being a teacher. As a teacher, I have an opportunity to make an impact in the life of every child I encounter. As an effective teacher, I know that all children have different learning abilities. In our schools today, there are special education students that are not getting the same opportunities as general education students. One of the reasons a special education student may not be getting those opportunities is the teacher lacks the skills, needed to teach special education students.…
Special Education Inclusion addresses the controversy of inclusion in education. It argues that inclusions controversy stems from its relation to educational and social values in addition to individual worth. Stout states the important questions that should always be asked when discussing inclusion. She gives us some arguments from advocates on both sides of the issue and everyone in between. She recognizes that inclusion has no simple answers. She merely intends to overview the concepts of inclusion and offers some recommendations to ensure the needs of all students are met. Her overview begins with definitions of common vocabulary, discusses laws governing inclusion, court decisions that have governed placement under IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act), and ends with a conclusion, research, and discussion. Finally, she gives recommendations for inclusion success.…
Over representation of students who are ethnically and racially diverse in special education transpires when some groups of students possess a greater need for particular services. For instance, there may be a higher percentage of Latino students where Spanish is the primary language used for communication. If so, these students deriving from Latino origin will most often require English language instruction. As a result, this particular group would demonstrate over representation of students from the Latino background that primarily speak Spanish requiring a certain service (Hosp, n.d.).…
