Peer Pressure and College Students College life is full of highs and lows, happiness and sadness, but on a more fundamental level college is about making the choices between right and wrong by yourself for the first time in your life. There are no parents there to say that something is a mistake and not to do it, you don’t get infinite chances to make the right decision; You have to decides for yourself what you think is right. In the case of many college students who have difficulties making their own choices they submit to the choices that others in their peer group have made instead. This social phenomenon is called peer pressure. Peer pressure is the social influence of a peer group exerts on its individual members in order to make them change as a result of social norms. This conformity to the group is an issue I have often struggled with and it led me to wondering, why peer pressure is so effective in influencing college students? In college people who aren’t accustomed to being by themselves for extended periods of time in a new situation, people who struggle being by themselves all look for a leader or person that they can look to for guidance. When you become a follower you strive to please others so that they like you instead of trying to make them like you for who you really are. I use to think I needed to prove that I belonged socially by following everyone and it was easy just do what others do. Peer pressure is an easy solution to decision making and relieves the pressures of making tough choices and can leads to poor life choices in many situations however peer pressure can be a good thing and often times helps people. Peer pressure is a very individualistic thing even though it happens on a large scale. Everyone is affected by peer pressure differently and has different reasons for allowing peer pressure to influence their decision making. By interviewing 5 different people I was able to delve into

Peer pressure can be completely harmless, but also terribly deadly. In his Confessions, St. Augustine talks about a number of such situations in which he found himself during his adolescence. These events took place because of his friends and the pressure they put on him. Over the centuries since Augustine’s era, much has changed in our world. Has peer pressure been changed or expelled from our world? No. This “natural phenomenon” among humans was in full use long before Augustine’s time, and unless all can truly stand secure in themselves, it will continue long after this day and age.…

Have you ever been pressured into doing something you did not want to do? This is peer pressure which is a strong social influence over peers that each member attempts to conform to the expectations of the group (dictionary.com). In peer pressure, there are usually consequences that could be destructive for the pressured individual (Kreske, 2008). It is very common for children to experience peer pressure during youth even in adulthood. There are some pressures that could be detrimental to their well being. I will argue that peer pressure is extremely detrimental that it can lead to putting their self and health at risk, put the person in severe situations that could make them feel as if they have to fit in and belonged or to be liked, and can lead to bad decisions which can result in life-changing consequences.…

College involves a process that has been deeply engrained in our brains ever since we were young’uns. The concept of conformity is widely accepted and promoted in that particular social institution and other similar ones in society with the same design and concept, which functions to essentially debilitate and control specific demographics. For instance, there is not much distinction between elementary school, middle school, high school, and college. Similarly, they all involve following both unwritten and written rules, social norms, and conduct in a religious and attentive manner or else there are extreme consequences that must be faced in response. Evidently, those social institutions do not allow much freedom and individuality to be permitted.…

Human beings have been fighting each other since prehistoric times, and people have been discussing the rights and wrongs of it for almost as long. The Ethics of War starts by assuming that war is a bad thing, and should be avoided if possible, but it recognises that there can be situations when war may be the lesser evil of several bad choices. War is a bad thing because it involves deliberately killing or injuring people, and this is a fundamental wrong - an abuse of the victims’ human rights. (www.bbc.co.uk) The rationale of ethics in war is to help in making a decision on what is right or wrong, both for individual soldier and the countries involved. War ethics also leads to the establishment of formal laws of war (e.g. The Hague and Geneva conventions), the creating and enforcing of rules of engagement for soldiers, and in the punishment of soldiers and others who commit war crimes.…

Everyone knows about the negative affects of peer pressure. However, peer pressure can be positive; it is also not as scary as some may believe. "Studies show that, almost always, peer influence is weaker than adults believe" (Black, 2002). Adults tend to underestimate middle school children and their ability to make decisions on their own. When a child commits a wrongdoing, parents automatically want to blame peer influence. Yet research has shown that young adolescents are not necessarily drawn into certain behaviors by peer pressure, rather they decide to be more like their peers on their…

Author William Zinsser write in his essay “ College Pressures ” that students can face a wide variety of pressures like parental, economical to even the most common type, self induced pressure. Although college is supposed to help students develop as individual people, they are placed into an environment that is extremely competitive when it comes to over all grades. This creates students that torture themselves over the grade places on their transcript and can increase the need for some students to look for an escape.
