Ethnocentrism is human nature to define one's own culture as the more superior and more intellectual. That also includes the way human nature to look down upon the practices of other cultures because they are dissimilar and/or goes against their own customs. Individuals see ethnocentrism daily, in all qualities of life. The United States of America is a crucial example of ethnocentrism. The people of this nation tends to neglect and disregard other cultures, believing that American culture is superior. Horace Miner wrote a book based on the ethnocentrism in the American people, however, it leads them to believe they were reading about another culture elsewhere.…
Ethnocentrism is judging another culture or religion by the beliefs, and values of their own religion. Ethnocentrism is considered a natural human habit, and it has developed a generally negative connotation. Ethnocentrism can be detrimental to a society in many ways. First, it can make someone judge another person because they are not the same religion, and they will automatically feel hate towards the other person. Second, we will probably think wrong of that person and decide not to get to know them since we already decided to judge them before we actually met them. Finally this can harm anyone and make us not like each other…
Ethnocentrism is when a group is judged based on their cultural beliefs. Ethnocentrism is detrimental to society because it teaches intolerance. In order for diversity to work out for everyone, we all must be willing to be open to learning about a group before judging, and accepting that judgement based on what we think we know. Ethnocentrism cuts off knowledge of a culture by segregating them into a group that isn’t acceptable.…
Before the Europeans made contact with the Native Americans that had already came up with their own thoughts and beliefs towards them. The Europeans felt superior to all other people and cultures that weren’t their own. It was as if their way of life was the only way to be and live. This way of thinking is basically to otherize a person or group of people. The Europeans had never encountered the Native Americans before but they imagine them to be barbaric because they did not seem to have a form of government and had what they felt was too much freedom.…
Ethnocentrism is the belief in the superiority of the nation or group to which someone belongs. It can be detrimental to society because there are groups and people out there that don’t believe that the nation is superior and that everyone just needs to live their own lives not caring about anyone else. Some people have a negative attitude towards superiority in the nation and it’s government as a result of what our government does and what it doesn’t do also. Like people think the government is trying to take everyones homes away from them as a result of the government raising property taxes which is just plain stupid because there are so many low income families that can’t afford property taxes as it is and there’s going to end up being a lot of bank owned homes all over the U.S. if they keep raising taxes and what not. That’s the perspective I have on it.…
Ethnocentrism is where people believe that they are better than others in an ethnic group, but it can also develop from racial or religious differences. This can cause problem by leading to false opinions about different cultures, maybe causing communication problems.…
What is ethnocentrism? In what ways can ethnocentrism be detrimental to a society? When I looked up the definition it read, ethnocentrism is the belief in the inherent superiority of one’s own ethnic group or culture (“Dictionary.com”, 2013). I think that ethnocentrism can be detrimental to society because it causes division among people. For example east coast verses west coast. Tupac verses Biggie Smalls. They both thought that they were better than the other because of where they were from, Tupac from the west coast and Biggie from the east coast. Because of how they viewed each other because of what coast they were from it caused division amongst the music community. They’re views ultimately caused their deaths. Ethnocentrism caused division between two men who were of the same ethnicity but from two different…
Throughout all of American history, minorities have been plagued with ill treatment and discrimination. In every corner of the nation’s history, it is very easy to find example after example of the cruel treatment brought upon those who did not fit into society, or rather got in the way of where it was heading. The Native Americans were among the earliest to fall into this misunderstood category, and were immediately looked down upon. Due to misconceptions about their culture and people, and the desperate need and greed of the early Europeans, the Native Americans fell victim to a long-time precedent of unfair discrimination and brutal treatment. Even for centuries following the first explorers, the thoughts towards Native Americans were seemingly unchanged, and these people were seen only as huge obstacles for the ever-growing United States.…
Considering our history as a colony of Great Britain, we should know better not to enact the same actions on other countries. We did what the English did to us back in the 1700s; we did not want to hear about the natives’ grievances. They are thousands of miles away of us, so we should not try to interfere with them. The idea of western civilization being superior to other cultures is narrow-minded. The acts of racism toward the natives are just wrong. “Racism and social snobbery” are valid terms to describe the American’s attitude toward smaller…
Turner’s ethnocentric approach does not include the Native-American indians in his classification of an American. Instead, he refers to Native-Americans and their culture as “savage” and “uncivilized,” despite their arrival on the continent some 12,000 years ago, and their establishing extraordinary and complex social systems. It cannot be denied that the development of European-American culture in the United States largely resulted in the destruction of Native-American culture. However, Turner ignores the extraordinary pre-existing civilizations of the indians, and defines American history only by the contributions of those of European-American extraction. His is a social darwinist view of American history, where the strong grew in power and cultural influence, and the weak became sufficiently insignificant, that their long history is negated. Furthermore, European-Americans during the Westward Expansion, shared the land with not only Native-Americans, but also over time, with those of African, Hispanic, and Asian, non-white descent. Some of these non-white immigrants were an important source of labor, as exemplified by the…
One of the many myths that the Europeans created about the Native Americans is that they are bloodthirsty, ruthless savages. Oliver La Farge does a good job in his essay of discounting this myth by giving multiple examples of how most groups of Native Americans were a peaceful group of people that just were not quite as well developed socially, economically, technologically, etc. as the Europeans. Because of this lack of development on behalf of the Native Americans, the Europeans looked at the Native Americans as uncivilized savages. The reason that this myth was even created was to justify the slaughtering of thousands of Native Americans at the hands of the Europeans, with the justification being that they were inferior beings, which is another myth brought up. Once the Europeans had conquered the Native Americans, this myth was altered, now proclaiming that the Native Americans were drunken, lazy good-for-nothings. La Farge also discounts this part of the myth in his essay. Going back to the point of the Europeans thinking they were superior a superior race when being compared to the Native Americans, that would happen in any situation if the circumstances were similar because it is human nature to believe that if one race able to conquer another race, then they will believe they are superior. This is one of the continuing myths that have hid…
One of the more horrible and lesser known aspects of the Europeans colonization of the United States is the destruction of numerous Native American societies and cultures. With whites feeling that Native Americans were on "their" land, the United States tried to force the Native Americans to assimilate to white people in the United States. Native Americans were forced into becoming new citizens in the United States. The repercussions of this massive destruction of the American Indians is still felt today in some ways.…
Racialization refers to how individuals classify each other by utilizing their knowledge or understanding of race. Naturally, the term ‘race’ is used to describe someone based off of their physical characteristics. Racialization is often defined by a dominant group, that has more social power than that of another group of individuals. A highly radicalized society can have an effect on one`s life chances based on the group that they are in. Additionally, Racial Identity, refers to how children who are members of a multiracial family come to cope with racial grouping and also helps them coordinate and understand multiracial identities. Furthermore, as stated in the text, children who have parents of two separate races have the opportunity to…
Any action on the part of individuals, a group of people or institutions that promote the believed superiority of one group, profession, or set of ideas over another can be considered ethnocentric. Ethnocentrism is defined as one’s own race or ethnic group as of supreme importance than the order race or group. It is apparent that a broader use of the term has entered common usage. It has been demonstrated that ethnic and cultural values and beliefs influence the way individuals and groups view health and disease and determine what practices are followed when illness occurs. Ethnocentric points of view can prevent attempts to acknowledge ethnic differences and cultural values in making health decisions that better address the health concerns…
Historically, this notion of cultural relativism developed to fight the old racism. Starting in the Fifteenth Century and culminating in the Nineteenth Century, the old racism was based upon a notion of civilizational hierarchy. Believing that all human populations pass through three stages--savagery, barbarism, and civilization--these racists confidently and arrogantly averred that only whites achieved the last stage of development. They believed that only whites are suited or capable of civilization and that other groups occupy intermediate rungs on the ladder--either savagery or…
