Ethnographic Interview Reflection
After completing this project, I’ve realized how much I have learned during this experience. This is one of the main projects I completed this semester and I believe it helped me grow immensely as a teacher. I will always have to conduct parent interviews with the parents of my students. I know this is a sure fact and I will use these skills I learned all throughout my career. Along with this, I plan to eventually become a principal in the future, so I will definitely need ethnographic interviewing skills to be a good mentor, leader, and principal. I also believe that parents should be completely involved in their child’s education, so after doing this study, I can see how much parents can actually be involved and how beneficial it is. Before conducting this interview, I was very nervous about speaking to the parents of my students. I was especially worried because I’m not one of the lead teachers and I’m still learning how to be a teacher. Along with this, I also had some preconceptions about J’s home life. I had no idea why J and S are growing up with their aunt and uncle and although I’m still not 100% sure why, Mrs. T opened up to me more than I thought she would. My mentor teacher, assistant teacher, and I decided on some different strategies that would help J in the classroom. My mentor teacher decided to start a sticker chart, which is applied to all the children in the classroom. Although this is a reward system, it seems to be working a lot for J. Another thing we decided to do is offer the safe space to J when he is feeling like he can’t control his behavior. If J is feeling anxious he is allowed to go to the safe space and think.     My cultural interview was with a coworker, 28 years of age and of Hispanic descent. While conducting the interview I learned a lot about the Hispanic culture. Many Hispanics like to be called Latino (a). Some do not like to be referred to as Mexican when they are from other countries other than Mexico. Hispanics also use slang within their culture just like African Americans. Within the culture the male is the dominant figure in the household. All the decisions that affect the family go through the father. If there is no father in the house, the oldest son fulfills that role. The older son may drop out of school so that they may assist the mother at the house in the absence of the father. Many Hispanics usually marry fairly young and start to raise a family. When they get older they usually do not marry, but live together like husband and wife. The average number of members within the family is 7 including the mother and father. The mother is usually the caregiver and stays home to look after the children. The oldest daughter steps in and helps the mother out whenever she can. The grandparents are considered the second mom and dad. Their cousins are regarded as an extension of their siblings. My interviewee has 2 brothers who she is very close to. If her brothers tell her to do something even at age 28 she really makes sure she follows their directives. Her mother is divorced from her father, but he still plays an active part in her and her brothers’ life. The relationship between the mother and father is still very close even though they are not married. The relationship between the mother’s new boyfriend and ex- husband is very cordial and respectful in an attempt to maintain a loving and positive environment for their family.…

    At 1:00 p.m. I entered into Evoline C. West Elementary school on Thursday, July 12 2012 for an interview with Mrs. Yolanda Lawrence. As I entered the classroom, I was greeted by Mrs. Lawrence, the head teacher in this classroom. Mrs. Lawrence has no assistant at this present because of it being in the summer.
