Ethnography on Fraternities
Tevin Hamilton
August 25, 2013
Personal Bio My name is Tevin Hamilton. I am from Topeka, Kansas. This semester I will attend KU for my first semester of my sophomore year. I attended Barton County Community College on a tennis scholarship last year. Last year should have been a great opportunity for me to improve my game as well as improve my grades in the classroom. Unfortunately, my coach was reprimanded for athletic misconduct; he would skip my men's practice after personally instructing every girl on our women's tennis team, which I thought highly discriminated my teammates and I. Honestly, I never thought I would come to the University of Kansas or even think about joining a fraternity. However, after talking with some of the brothers in Sigma Pi I feel like I would fit right in. Sigma Pi seems like a really great opportunity to not only socialize and enjoy my college experience here at KU, but also join a brotherhood, make friends I will have for the rest of my life, and become a part of something very few people have the opportunity to do. Coming in to summer three months ago I had no clue where I was going to go. I went on plenty of visits to schools in which I had the opportunity to play tennis. The whole time however I felt like I was following my father's footsteps because he too played sports at the collegiate level and actually won a national championship. His accomplishments drove me to apply myself and become the best at what I did as well. I went on one visit for fun this summer, KU. After my visit I felt like I wanted to make my own path. The opportunites seemed endless here at KU. My freshman year I only did reasonably well in the classroom because I knew I had to in order to play tennis. I feel different this year; I feel more motivated to commit myself to education. Ask anyone that knows me and they will tell you how much I hate to lose in anything that I do. Whether that was not knowing something in the classroom, at my job, or

However, I will address your concerns since you were keen to bring it up. The pledge process, though extremely important, is merely an initial step towards being a brother of the Sigma Chi fraternity. The constitution you acknowledged during your pledge term placed heavy emphasis on lifelong commitment, and required you to pay all dues owed to the chapter throughout your time as an undergraduate member. Since then, you’re actions have indicated the exact opposite, as you have blown off subsequent Initiation responsibilities, and have removed yourself from attending any chapter meetings or having any involvement with the business of the…

I knew the amount needed to succeed was monstrous and that I could not handle that with everything else. I also realized that this was going to be my final year of marching band. By the end of the year, my passion to continue both was lacking so I decided to go with tennis. I the flame I had for marching band had burnt out. The next year the amount of stress that I had voluntarily signed up for had been lightened considerably. Even though I missed some aspects of marching band, I realized trying to do too much at once of anything was never a good idea. I learned this the hard…

While I hope to gain a lot from the fraternity, I also find it fun to contribute as well. I do have work/internship experience, so I feel that I can contribute my experiences and recommendations to the group. I also feel that I am a pretty out going and positive person, so I feel like I would add positivity to the group. Lastly, I am hardworking, so the fraternity can count on me to be a team player and actively engage in the AK Psi events/activities.…

I am only now beginning to enter my sophomore year at college but there has always one part of it that has been especially exciting, the parties. Yes, those glorious nights where you can escape from the nagging of your parents, procrastinate on some of that homework, or maybe even meet someone special. Any average college student could tell you that the craziest parties always happen on Thirsty Thursdays. Once that day of the week comes around students start to forget the stresses of their week and go out to try and have some fun, sometimes too much fun. Many great memories are made at parties, some are good others seem to be the worst times of your life. But what drives a college student to party so hard? Is it s lack of confidence, a desire to fit in, just to let loose, or one of the other many possibilities? In this essay I reflect upon a few of the many parties I attended this past semester and studied the party goers so i could perhaps understand the drive to get so out of hand. During the course of composing my field notes, which I have blended into my essay, I gathered experiences as both an insider and an outsider to the environment to search for the answer to some of my questions.…

Of the 24 documented cases of alleged gang rape by college students in the past 10 years, fraternity men perpetrated 13. The problem of group sexual assault on college campuses mainly occurs in an environment where group behavior and acceptance is important to the men involved, i.e. fraternities (Bechhofer & Parrot 144). Looking at the environment surrounding this type of group one can see what causes the prevalence of this type of assault in fraternities. Why does this violence occur within these groups and how is it handled? The dynamics involved in the fraternity 's system causes a "group-think" mentality that promotes and sometimes causes group sexual assault. This group influence, along with the fraternity 's selection of men and their adherence to traditional sex role stereotypes reinforces myths of acceptable behavior in men and women and how these play a role concerning consequences.…

For many college students, fraternities and sororities have been a place to find family like bonds and close knit communities. What if it meant great humiliation and forced tasks in able to be a part of these communities? For the past few decades, interest in Sororities and Fraternities interest has declined because of the increased reports of cruelty and hazing related to initiation. Hazing is involved during the initiation of the pledges because the current members of the house want to see how far the pledges will go to gain acceptance into the house. Some reports of hazing have been so serious, that it led to the death of a student. Hazing has become a dangerous act in the Greek system. The hazing that…

Athletics has played an important role in my life. It has taught me to be disciplined, work hard for what I want, and be able to make a commitment. Through sports, I have learned to be a leader on and off the court. In order to exceed, one must believe in themselves. One of my favorite quotes puts my athletics mindset into a few sentences, “Keep your dreams alive. Understand to achieve anything requires faith and belief in yourself, vision, hard work, determination and dedication. Remember all things are possible for those who believe” (Gail Devers). The hard work and dedication one puts into the off season and practice is the player who will stand out on the court. Sports have taught me that things do not come easy and hard work will pay off in the end.…

At five I was running around on the tennis court with racket that is bigger then I am. Well I can say for sure that I missed my childhood. While my friends were playing outside I was on the tennis court working hard for my future. Even though I did not realize it then. I never had friends that would be there for me and through all sore and crumping muscles, through tears and pain I got stronger, independent and more mature then people at the same age of mine are. I made my mother’s dream come true. Out of every victory I remember how proud she is that I am here in America while these other kids that were paying hide and seek while I had practice are back home and probably doing drugs. And I am actually very happy that I am playing tennis 15 years already but at the same time I love music more then anything. At the same time I was playing and giving piano concerts for 3 years. But my parents did not approve it. My friend Vladik would say “You should act on your own best interest. You shouldn’t play tennis and build your life on it if you love music more then tennis.” Well I guess I could agree with him but at the same time that is all my life and I do not want to quit in the middle of the road. Because through all these 15 years I made my own dream to open a tennis academy in NYC. Well my cousin would say “The only desirable goal is the creating of happiness and pleasure and the elimination of pain. And since tennis is bringing you a lot of pain and sufferings then you should do music instead since it is what you love. But at the end you will be judged based on consequence…

The first thing that enters my mind when I hear the word fraternities are organizations of guys who spend their time drinking beers and having their social gatherings. Well, these accusations have been proven many times on the articles that I have read a long time ago, that most fraternity members, especially on college campuses are seen as drunks who accomplish nothing scholastically or socially. But this impression of mine has changed a little after I have done some researches regarding on the topic. Most people fail to mention the fact that there are some memberships in fraternity who value a life-long experience that help their members develop social organization and study skills and also teach true, everlasting friendship.…
