The Influence of Television and Media on American Views of Ethnoracial Groups A recent study taken during the fourth quarter of 2010 found that the average American watches approximately 154 hours of television per month (“State of the Media” 2). The large amount of time an American spends in front of a television plays a key role in shaping the public views and opinions of different ethnoracial groups (Newman 380). For the past week I 've gathered information in regards to how ethnoracial groups are portrayed in prime-time television. The social class of each ethnoracial group on prime-time television was between the middle and upper class, and in many cases the role of an upper class ethnoracial character was negatively shown. For example, Tracy Jordan 's excessive and extravagant lifestyle in NBC 's “30 Rock” is representative of the stereotypical affluent African American celebrity living a largely materialistic and extravagant lifestyle. Even the way in which Tracy Jordan’s extravagance is displayed is stereotyped. For example, he is shown wearing large jewelry and owning fancy cars. In “Parks and Recreation”, the African American character Donna, described by NBC as the “parks diva” (“Parks and Recreation”), represents the stereotype of the loud, cynical African American …show more content…
