We Provide Opportunities For Activities, Companionship, Skills Building, And Social Interaction For The Elderly And Disabled Populations.…
Being active in National Charity League for six years, I have had the pleasure of working with many different philanthropies, my favorite being The Tualatin School House Pantry. Operating out of the basement of a church, the food bank helps to feed families in the community who are struggling financially. While my first few experiences at the food pantry were emotionally challenging, I found them to be very eye opening. I met many people from different backgrounds, yet they all shared the same hardship, the inability to afford food for themselves and their families. Wanting to do more for the recipients, I received training to be one of the personal shoppers.…
Volunteering at the SOAR agency was one of the coolest experiences I have ever had. I will be honest though, when I was first assigned the service hours I was not too thrilled about it. I had never worked with individuals who had disabilities before. I had been around them, but never worked or volunteered with them. Learning about all the disabilities in class was one thing, but actually going out and interacting with the people was another thing. I was very nervous to say the least. But looking back on it, I could not be happier about it. I am glad I got this opportunity.…
(Salvation Army, 2000 -2013). Although my initial reason for being there was for school purposes, I chose the facility because I truly wanted to give back in the…
Our small project focused on the leadership and service pillars. Every other week on Saturday from 1-3, we went to Summerwood of Chanhassen to work with the patients who have dementia. Typically we would run each session by doing activities with them. Each week the activities were different but some included, the alphabet game, memory/brain games, kick ball using a beach ball. Throughout the months, we really started to get to know the patients and connected with them and the patient’s looked forward to us coming. . Personally this experience was very…
Appalachian Service Project is about helping people and building relationships. The people who are served in Appalachia live in homes and circumstances that are difficult for me to understand. The feelings of accomplishment and fulfillment I felt when I saw the looks in the eyes of the homeowners when our work was finished was indescribable. They had so little, yet were so happy. But each year is…
Social economic organizations can range from a variety of different perspectives, and depending on the type social institution, there may be alternate approaches directed towards enhancing the social economy. The Young Men’s Christian Organization, or otherwise known as the YMCA was founded in London, England over 170 years ago. In 1844 a man by the name of George Williams founded the first YMCA in hopes of strengthening and motivating individuals within a society. This specific social institution can be identified as part of the social sector within an economy. The YMCA aims to improve all individual’s health and quality of life, as a result, this can be understood by the concept of reciprocity; as a…
Over the past summer I had the opportunity to go to Deep Impact in Shelby, North Carolina. Deep Impact is a mission camp that is run by The Baptist Men that gathers youth groups throughout the state to help the needy and to spread the Word of Jesus. There were different mission teams at the camp and I was placed on a construction team. On my construction team, we helped elderly and disabled people by building wheelchair ramps for them. The construction team had three supervisors, and they made the kids on the team do most of the work. We would do different kinds of work like digging out holes for posts, saw boarding, or screwing in decking boards. I really enjoyed this kind of work and it really made me feel good that when we finished, we were…
I served as a student volunteer for Hammer and Nails a non-profit organization that works to serve the community with the mission of improving the quality of lives for low-income families through home repair. Most of the home owners in Canton, Ohio faced financial hardship and could not fund the extensive repair and renovation that their homes needed and thus relied on volunteer services for help. Through my time spent with Hammer and Nails I savored learning about the families within the community and how their lives were impacted by the local volunteers throughout many years. I enjoyed helping in the office with administrative work and with home renovations through painting and carpeting. I learned that a healthy life begins at home, and a clean and well-constructed home contributes to good physical and mental health.…
Bringing people together encouraging human unity is a gift. Participating in service demonstrates that a person cares for others. There is no measurement for service to society, it is what helps to make the world a better place. I provide service regularly at my church, City Of Faith Church Of God. The congregation inspires me to give as much of me to them, as I possibly can. Working at. The church food pantry brings me joy.feeding citizens who are without the basics, food, and seeing the look of relief on their faces is one of the greatest experiences. Additionally, preparing for the culmination of "Child's Month Celebration" has been a lot of fun. Designing the logo based on the theme of "Be A Winner and Join The Race" was a fulfilling role. As a nominee of the National Honors Society , my mind overflows with ideas of how we can serve in our community. Some tasks we can fulfill include visiting the elderly. I am certain that they would appreciate and enjoy us going to read and/or listen them. Helping to clean our school environment would also be a good use of our service. In addition, I believe that academic tutoring from members of the Honors Society to students at NFA, other schools in the district, and the public library would be very useful and effective. Our service is important and would be very effective in our…
As an executive officer in Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, each individual is responsible for a legacy project during the school year. I was responsible for SOS Children’s Village which is a foster care neighborhood that houses children that were abused, neglected and/or abandoned. Even though this was a one-day experience, I was thrilled about the opportunity to work with children as I believe that no child should be denied proper medical care and a healthy home. It is said that time goes by when you are having fun. This was true for our experience as we went four hours over time. I coordinated leadership and team building activities for the children in which both the volunteers and participants enjoyed. Who knew that in five hours’ strong bonds can be developed with a stranger that you might not encounter again.…
In high school, I joined Zonta Club to be involved with school and community. Zonta Club gave me an opportunity to reach out to people that had helped others and inspired other students to do the same. One of the unforgettable moments was when I volunteered in a fundraiser to help Alzheimer's disease. It was an event, called Rock-a-Thon, where kids and adults were together to raise awareness those who had the disease. Everyone was participating in the activities that were available in the event. There were games that both kids and elders could play with. They showed stories about the importance of being aware and helping those with Alzheimer’s disease. The event had shaped my views on giving back to the community. Service was not only about giving back, but it is also about learning from others. The joy that the people had even when there was a sickness in their life was incredible. It made me realize how I was fortunate to be living a life without the disease. The fundraiser had made me learn about the people in my town and the obstacles that had to endure and were still enduring. The event had impact the involvement and the appreciation I have over the…
Throughout my high school career, I have been given numerous opportunities to lead other students by example, work ethic, volunteerism, and school involvement. I believe that my greatest impact as a leader in high school has been through my participation in a Service Learning Class. This class gave me the chance to help and lead others by tutoring younger students in the middle school and elementary school. As a senior, I felt responsible for providing a voice for the class in ideas and decisions to help better our school. I worked with administrators, teachers, and class members to promote healthy habits of responsibility, school pride, respect, and service.…
Some things that I learned from this service experience was that I should never go into anything with expectations. When I decided to go that afternoon, I was really bummed because I don’t really like service hours and I didn’t want to go on a long and boring service event. However, the positive personalities of all the people working there perked…
Place of Hope is a distinctive faith-based, state-licensed children's organization in Palm Beach Gardens. Place of Hope provides family-style foster care (emergency and long-term); family outreach and intervention; maternity care; safety for victims of domestic minor sex trafficking; transitional housing and support services; foster care recruitment and support; hope and healing opportunities for children and families who have been traumatized by abuse and neglect throughout our region. Place of Hope sent an email requesting volunteers to decorate bedrooms for some of the children. I was excited to be part of such a great project.…
