“Medea” was an ancient Greek tragedy which was written by Euripides. It also was the most popularity mythology that spread to the Apennines in the 8th to 7th centuries B.C. Both play and film’ plot are about Medea, who is a princess of Colchis and also, is a barbarian witch as half human and half divine. Her grandfather is Helios, the Greek Sun god. However, she worships to Hecate, the goddess of dark place. She blindly falls in love with Jason who is a prince of Iolcus. Because of needing her power and helps, he gets married to her to stole the Golden Fleece to get his homeland back from his uncle. She even betrays her own family and kills so many for helping him. The stage production was set up at Clarence Brown Theater University of Tennessee in 1982. They made the structure of huge stone gate of the castle and the stones stair case, which belongs to the high class house in the society. Especially, at the end of the film, Medea does not fly away with her dragon after killing her sons. Furthermore, the Corinth women wear their traditional outfits, which is the long dress with the curly tight updo hairstyle or the veils. In addition, most of their outfits have the dusty golden yellow, which introduce their high level of family status in the society. On the other hand, the nurse wears the dark gray dress, which shows the different between the two societies as a lower class. By cover covering her face with a black veil, the audience can guess something bad already happened to Medea’s sons such as the nurse is making a funeral for someone.
In conclusion, the different between the play version and the film version is the film helps the audience can deeply understand the characters’ emotional and setting period.
