ADDENDUM TO COURSE OUTLINE Instructor email: remsenj@sunysuffolk.edu Phone: (631) 851-6824 Office: Sagtikos 110 Office Hours Spring 2013: M Tu Th 11:00 A.M.-12:15 P.M. W 6:00-7:15 P.M. (Virtual) This addendum addresses how I run my classroom and what I expect of students above and beyond what is presented in the syllabus. I also offer tips for success in the course, and advice to help you determine if this course will meet your career goals once you complete it. Please take this information in the spirit in which it is offered: to foster a better learning environment, and to help you avoid outcomes that are not helpful to advancing your goals, whatever those may be. PREREQUISITES AND INTENDED AUDIENCE: BIO 150 is the first half of a twosemester sequence in modern biology. The course is taught at a science majors level and is intended for students who wish to enter the biological sciences, health professions, etc., or who wish to pursue bachelor’s or graduate degrees in biology or related fields. High school chemistry is the minimum prerequisite. MATERIALS: It is recommended that you buy a notebook for both lecture and lab in addition to the lecture textbook and lab manual. Try not to mix lecture and lab notes. STUDY TIPS: Ideally, you should go home and review each lecture’s notes within a day of the lecture being given, and keep this up for the whole semester. Also read the pertinent sections in the textbook. The lecture outlines I am providing you are just that, outlines. They should be used as a study guide, because only topics included in the outlines are eligible for the exams to be given. The outlines do NOT, however, contain every piece of information contained in the lectures. You need to take good notes and study your textbook as well if you wish to do well on the exams. Your goal should be to understand the material such…

    Euthanasia

    • 985 Words
    • 4 Pages

Euthanasia should be legalized to allow terminally ill patients the opportunity to prepare for their deaths, avoid unnecessary pain and die with dignity. Euthanasia is “the act or practice of ending the life of an individual suffering from a terminal illness or an incurable condition, as by lethal injection or the suspension of extraordinary medical treatment.” (Am. Heritage) The literal meaning of the word euthanasia, "‘an easy or happy death,’ from the Greek word eu- ‘good’, and thanatos ‘death’"(Harper), is proof in itself that the whole idea is to help people and not to belittle the value of life. The fact that suffering animals can be put out of their misery, but suffering people are forced to stay alive and endure the pain, is inhumane. Legalizing euthanasia would be no more than an act of mercy allowing medical personnel to bring slow, painful deaths to a halt.…

The overall purpose of the Euthanasia act it to allow those who are terminally ill to have to right to die on their own terms. Euthanasia is a drug that those who wish to die on their own terms are given in the formal of a pill. After receiving the pill, the patient then shallows the pill, ending their own life on their own terms. This concept of Euthanasia as caused a lot of controversy over the past couple of years. Specifically within the year of 2014, the act of Euthanasia has caught the attention of many, especially who of high position within our government. While this act of assisted suicide is illegal in many of our states today, some states such as Washington, Oregon, Montana, Vermont and New Mexico carry out his law off dying on your own terms. Many well known case of these issues of dying on your own terms such as Washington v. Glucksberg (1997), Gonzales v. Oregon (2006) Baxter v. Montana (2009). " Reflecting the religious and cultural diversity of the United States, there is a wide range of public opinion about euthanasia and the right-to-die movement in the United States. During the past 30 years, public research shows that views on euthanasia tend to correlate with religious affiliation and culture, though not gender." (CNN.COM) "The legislation of assisted suicide has moved a significant step closer after the Government made clear that it would not stand in the way of a change in the law.Conservative and Liberal Democrat MPs and peers – including Coalition ministers – will be given a free vote on a Bill that would enable doctors to help terminally ill patients to die, The Telegraph can disclose. The proposed legislation will come before Parliament in the next few months. On Saturday night, Norman Lamb, a Liberal Democrat and the minister responsible for care for elderly and disabled people, was among the first to say he would vote in favor. Several other ministers and senior MPs and peers have previously signaled support for the move. Mr.…

Eligibility for Biology 231 requires a passing grade in Biology 111 or 188. If you received a grade of “D” in these course(s) you probably have not mastered the material to the desired extent. If you have not successfully completed the first semester of this course, at UMES or at another institution, your registration in this course will be cancelled. In addition, one year of college level chemistry would be most helpful in providing the expected entry-level competency in areas dealing with a) cell and organ function, b) atomic structure, acids, bases, electrolytes and organic molecules and c) proper use and handling of simple laboratory apparatus.…

    Euthanasia

    • 14 Pages

Like other terms borrowed from history, "euthanasia" has had different meanings depending on usage. The first apparent usage of the term "euthanasia" belongs to the historian Suetonius who described how the Emperor Augustus, "dying quickly and without suffering in the arms of his wife, Livia, experienced the 'euthanasia' he had wished for." The word "euthanasia" was first used in a medical context by Francis Bacon in the 17th century, to refer to an easy, painless, happy death, during which it was a "physician's responsibility to alleviate the 'physical sufferings' of the body." Bacon referred to an "outward euthanasia"—the term "outward" he used to distinguish from a spiritual concept—the euthanasia "which regards the preparation of the soul."…
