5. REQUIRED TEXTS:
Lecture: Campbell’s BIOLOGY, by Reece. et. al. 10th edition. Benjamin/Cummins, Menlo Park, CA.
Laboratory: Dolphin, W. D. 1999. Biological Investigations: Form, Function, Diversity, and Process. 9th edition. WCB/McGraw-Hill, Boston, MA.
Note: Older editions of either book are acceptable, however, a used edition of the Campbell book will require the additional purchase of a Mastering Biology account (see below)
6. COURSE OBJECTIVES:
To give the student a grounding in basic biological principles and techniques, and to prepare him or her for more advanced study in the biological sciences. The course will expose students to the basic molecules that mediate the processes of life, and will strive to explain the properties of these molecules from their chemical and structural configurations. It will acquaint a student with cellular structure and function, the processes of membrane transport, cellular respiration, photosynthesis, cellular replication and the laws of simple Mendelian genetics.
7. STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES:
Students will be able to:
1. Critically analyze biological information
2. Organize and synthesize biological information into a logical sequence
3. Communicate clearly and in an organized fashion in writing
4. Use graphs, charts, tables and other visual media to summarize and clarify information and data
