In Euthyphro, Socrates tries to make Euthyphro understand the nature of piety without reference to God or religion. Socrates does this by asking Euthyphro whether piety “is the pious loved by the gods because it is pious, or is it pious because it is loved”. Socrates is going about this using metaethical inquiry. He is asking Euthyphro to provide the nature and quality of piety, including the meaning of piety itself.
Socrates is hoping to show Euthyphro that piety has some inner essential quality. He explains to Euthyphro that piety is holy and THEN it is loved, it is not holy BECAUSE it is loved. Socrates tries to compare the difference by saying that being loved is being affected
