Evaluate The Effectiveness Of Community Policing
The concept to community policing is to have an efficient organization and partnership between the citizens of the community and the police to address issues of public safety and disorder. Using the textbook, Crime Justice: A Brief Introduction 11th Edition, and the chapter 4 PowerPoint, I have generated an opinion to which I think community policing isn’t fully effective, depending on the community’s culture and police. Community policing is suppose to actively seek the community’s engagement and efforts to ideally determine neighborhood problems and how to address them. To contrast though, looking at page 117 in the textbook, critiques have been developed that community’s who have dissatisfaction with the police are seen a lot in neighborhoods characterized with: street crime, drug trafficking, minorities, and poverty. There is also citizen dissatisfaction generally with African Americans in much higher levels, as reported in studies which are generally stated in the textbook, and relationships between the police and African Americans remain poor. Also, officers in these types of neighborhood tend to see their role more as strict interpretation of the law and arrest, rather than coming together with the community to define community needs and approach them.

I believe that there are positive influences of police incorporation of community and social justice practices. “The presence of civilians within police complaint processes is said to enhance police credibility, accountability, and ultimately, public confidence in police services” (Watt, 1991). This approach to justice allows for positive growth among the community and the police.…

My analysis on the early police community and their focus on minority communities concluded with the understanding that these minority areas were and still are a prominent area when speaking on poverty and crime so of course focusing on these areas would be crucial to crime prevention. Though these minority areas that are dealing with poverty “may” have a negative impact on people in these areas and influence them in ways that a suburban area “probably” would not, they still are not the only areas heavily infested with crime. Though these high crime rates and criminals may be primarily migrating towards these areas of poverty or already residing in these areas of poverty, there is still more research and elaboration that must be done on this topic of analysis. It is true that areas full of poverty and oppression may challenge some and alter ones thinking eventually making it hard for some to think rationally and doing negative impulsive acts. For instance, rather than finding a job to pay bills and feed ones family one might sell drugs to drug addicts, not caring who they are hurting when selling those drugs, or maybe one will rob a neighbor’s house who they knew for many years, just to support an habit or addiction. These were and still are instances related to and happening inside of poverty oppressed minority group areas which is why most of the earlier focus from the police community relations programs was on the minority community.…

There are, of course, no guarantees that Community Policing can prevent civil disorders. But by reducing opportunities for police brutality and encouraging better relations between people and their police, Community policing can reduce the threat. Obviously, Community Policing cannot solve all the underlying economic and social problems, that poor neighborhoods face. Community Officers also cannot close the income gap between whites and minorities, nor do they come to their beats bearing lists of high-paying jobs for unskilled workers. Community Officers also cannot undo the effects of past childhood abuse and neglect. They cannot single-handedly eradicate the scourge of substance abuse, domestic evidence, illiteracy, and poverty, though they may be able to do far more than their motor patrol counterparts. Yet even the most dedicated Community Officers cannot play both Mother and Father for all the children whose parents simply do not…

Police community relations programs have not only improved the attitude of minority groups, and the entire public as a whole towards the police, but have also created a positive impact on communities by lowering the crime rate. Strategies used for community policing are as diverse as the population of the United States itself, but they all share the common goal of promoting strong relationships with those who in the past were underrepresented and abused. These programs continue to ensure an understanding between the justice system and the public, and are necessary for harmony between the…

The history of policing in America is divided into three eras. The political era, the reform era, and the community problem solving era. According to Kelling and Moore the community era of policing began in the 1970’s and continues today and was brought about due to declining public support and trust of the police. The citizens needed to believe the police cared about the communities they patrolled and were not just there to do a job. Police were isolated from the community especially in areas where the population was mostly minorities and there was a great deal of mistrust between the police and the citizens which led to higher crime and social disorder rates (Kelling & Moore 1988).…

There has been a significant interest in exploring the problems and potential solutions to policing in the 21st century. Community policing is a system that was enacted for the police to address problems and interact with the community to keep it safe and productive. In contrast, the police are behaving in contradictory ways. It is important to give awareness to people about the police brutality occurring in our present day and some of the effective ways to resolve these issues. Some of the solutions to police brutality are police accountability.…

Community policing is a program cities have continuously supported. When law enforcement officers interact in a positive manner with the citizens, it helps to create a sense of trust. If police officers create opportunities to meet people on a friendly level, it may change their negative points of view. For example, having “coffee-with-a-cop” sessions or holding a “car-seat check” station for new parents, and going out of their way to help indigent people, are all ways of presenting a human side to the police. The greatest obstacle in implementing community policing can be directly related to the refusal to implement change.…

Community policing is a philosophy that guides police management style and operational strategies. It emphasizes establishment of police-community partnerships and a problem-solving approach that is responsive to the needs of the community. So basically the police presence in the community will somehow not only protect the community, but to deter others from committing crimes. Now this seems like a perfect solution, but during the 1980’s to 1990’s racial tension was still brewing in the black communities. See the biggest problem was that African Americans did not feel comfortable with the police. In fact the presence of the police would in fact anger members of this community. Now why was this? I have few examples that would probably be appropriate for this…

As of chief of police it is my job to fight crime while providing a safer and healthier environment for the community. It is my goal to serve and work with the community for the future of our children and the resting days of our elders. Like other agencies and communities across the nation we as well have challenges and problems. Our community faces numerous challenges and problems that with dedication, determination, persistence, and effort are combatable. Crime to my definition is a like the cancer disease that spreads and the keys to fighting crime is through determination and strong support, in this case the support comes from the community who should never give up the battle on such deadly disease. As chief I plan on focusing on the needs of the community by building a strategic plan with fundamental keys and educational programs to strengthen and enforce the law.…

Community policing is maybe the foremost misinterpreted and regularly battered theme in police administration throughout the last ten years. Within the past few years, it 's become sensible for police organizations to recruit community policing, usually with very little notion of what that phrase suggests. Truly, all manner of structure change of state has been categorized as community policing. However community policing isn 't a…

"Poor police-community relations adversely affect the ability of the police to prevent crime and apprehend criminals. People hostile to the police are not so likely to report violations of the law, even when they are the victims. They are even less likely to report suspicious persons or incidents, to testify as witnesses voluntarily, or to come forward and provide information ... . Yet citizen assistance is crucial to law enforcement agencies if the police are to solve an appreciable portion of the crimes that are committed." (Sullivan, Dunham, & Alpert, 1987).…

To understand the effectiveness of community policing we first must understand the concept regarding community policing. Community policing is both a philosophy and an organizational strategy that allows the police and the community residences to work closely together in new ways to solve the problems, fear of crime, criminal disorder and at the same time increasing the community living conditions. The purpose of this position paper on community policing is to weigh the pros and cons. In order to write an effective position paper, the idea of know what the predecessors stand on this subject would not be a benefit because it is not his problem anymore. If I where to be the new Chief of Police, I would want my opinion to be of value and not regurgitated information from the prior Police Chief. This would be my opinion and if it is not what the City Mayor wants to hear then at least I still had my integrity and dignity. Community policing is a philosophy that promotes organizational strategies, which supports the problem-solving techniques and partnerships.
