The movement to cut art from many schools has been growing in recent years. Education cuts are becoming more prevalent as schools face tough decisions on budgets. Unfortunately, art classes are usually some of the first victims of these cuts. Recent protests in California reflect the growing concern about budget cuts. Schools have already made cuts of $18 billion in California and more cuts totaling $4.1 billion may be necessary (Kirkland 1). California is not the only state facing this situation. Lower tax revenues, increasing prices and the slow economic recovery have created problems across the United States. The event of recent cuts in the art programs is a serious issue, and when I become an art teacher I want to take a stand…
It’s important to have displays in the school because it shows a sense of pride and appreciation of the children work, because nothing shows you like and appreciate someone’s work than hanging it so everyone can see it. The children will feel their work is…
Schools should create a setting that is interesting with subjects that talk about topics of today’s world. To sit in a class day after day and here about only subject of our history can be quite boring for many street smart students. Adding some form of art in teaching, helping kids to identify with themselves through finding out what they make like to be taught in class would be a good way to teach students. Allowing students to interact instead of just listening to a professor’s lecture would be beneficially for students to really understand the subject.…
As a unit in social studies I would investigate the culture of the Native Americans. Native Americans have a wide range of art because of the many tribes that make up the Native American culture. Their art ranges from paintings, jewelry making, sculptures, pottery, masks, drums, totem poles, beadwork etc. I find Native American culture interesting. I am Native American myself and I enjoy learning and finding new things about my culture. The history of the Native Americans is expressed most times through their art. Their culture is tied with nature and spirits. They believed in respecting the land and the abundance of gifts it offered (Native American History).…
Socioeconomic flexibility should not define whether a student has access to explore art. Eliminating art from the majority of public school curricula positions art as a luxury available only to a few. I accept the responsibility of imparting my passion for art to students who lack this opportunity because I know how visual communication affirms identity.…
Art has benefits the development of children in school. Things like motor skills, involving making art by using paint brush or a crayons and using scissor. Development of language such as learning colors and shapes. Art is also visual learning…
Numerous individuals claim that core subjects, such as math and science, should have the most emphasis put on them in order to improve test scores. These people believe “time that is spent in art class can be better spent on other things” and that “time would be better used in a math or science class.” By providing core subjects with a stronger focus though, the arts programs will not be available to students. School budgets also pose a problem for arts programs. This problem is mainly found in low income schools and when the budget dips, arts programs are the first to go. When schools are cutting out arts programs for the students they are also cutting out inspiration and a form of expression. Therefore, students are less likely to attend. This is shown through a study titled “The Role of the Fine and Performing Arts in High School Dropout Prevention,” by the Center for Music Research at Florida State University and states…
The definition of intelligence according to the merriam-webster dictionary is the ability to learn or understand or to deal with new or trying situations or the ability to apply knowledge to manipulate one 's environment or to think abstractly as measured by objective criteria like IQ tests. The definition of achievement is an accomplishment, a result gained by effort, a great or heroic deed. Based on the definitions we can infer that intelligence may not necessarily play a role in achievement. An achievement can be to sail around the world while it may not be the most intelligent decision to make.…

The initial assignment is a necessary one and for a good reason. Why? Simple, it forces each student to begin to analyzing and enjoy the art in their community that they might not notice otherwise. I for one, am not a huge art fan. However, the assignment does bring me a step closer to becoming one. Swapping out lenses to take notice of the many different works of art in the community is truly eye opening. Instead of glancing over the painting in the lobby, for instance, now I take a moment to interpret the piece of art and the significance of the work. Now, most important to me, when looking at a piece of artwork, is understanding at conception the cultural influence on the artist. Analyzing it from that context allows the viewer to receive a history lesson as well as enjoy the work for a variety of other reasons.…
Typically, arts integration will have some type of hands-on activity. Some students may need a sensorimotor break or time to change up the daily school routine, art can allow for that to occur. In the classroom, “arts … provide assistance and enhancement for achieving increased student academic success” (Gullatt, 2008, p. 13) by providing students with a differing learning strategy. The integration of arts is a way to help students to look at an issue or concept from multiple lenses. The mindset that comes forth with art integration enables students a way to solve problems in a more creative approach. Additionally, teachers will be able to differentiate art integrated lessons to assist different types of learners such as visual, auditory or kinesthetic learners. The inclusion of art based activities offers the opportunity to close the gap between a ridged analytical mindset and creativity that art brings forth. With such influence, arts inclusion provides numerous educational benefits, allowing students to connect to the educational content. The combination of art, and art techniques alongside standard curriculum affords students the option to learn in a way that best suits their personal…
The course syllabus had all the learning objectives bolded with oversized fonts like it did not show its emphasis. I felt like an oversized bird in a small cage. I wanted to fly out of that class because we were learning how to draw basic circles. I remember that course syllabus and nothing on that paper mentioned and key phrases like growth or creativity. The overexaggerated paper mentioned simplistic tasks that I could individually learn at home. I looked right in front of me and saw a magnificent painting by the famous painter named Vincent van Gogh. The painting was called the starry night. The painting sparked creativity in me, by making me overlap the existing circles on my paper and made me create new meaning to my paper. The picture helped me visualize the importance of creativity and it helped me create a new learning experience. The philosopher of education named John Dewey mentioned in his book, “A lifetime would be too short to reproduce in words a single emotion. In reality; however, poet and novelist have an immense advantage over even an expert psychologist in dealing with emotion. For the former build up a concrete situation and permit it to evoke emotional response. Instead of a description of an emotion in intellectual and symbolic terms, the artist ‘does the deed that breeds’ the emotion.” (Dewey, John(N/A) Reconsidering John Dewey’s art as experience. Art Is a Powerful, Imperfect Form and the Experience of it Has the Potential to Be Transformative: Alexis Clements) This quote is a vivid representation that art can be manipulative and can be a factor that helps is grow our own self-worth through fostering our…
There has been a great debate whether or not the arts should be funded by the government. Opponents believe the money spent on art programs is being wasted. Many believe that the arts, whether it is a career or hobby, do not directly benefit the country. On the contrary, others conclude that a…
In most elementary schools in which I have substituted, I have taken general education classes to art, and I have taught art in the related arts wing for the entire day. There is a very important difference between the two - for the former, I often instruct and assist students in creating posters that reflect mathematics and science standards; for the latter, I spend the day incorporating art standards into a classroom and helping students create pieces of artwork that reflect these standards and make them proud of their hard work (Cornett, 2011, p. 12 - 13).…
