The research topic of this journal is mainly based on ways of improving pupil’s behaviour and attendance, and furthermore improving teaching and learning experience in schools. In order to support pupils with problems in school, ‘Family Group Conferences ‘(FGCs), existed and were being organised. Those are family-led decision-making meeting that include the family and significant others in the formations of a plan to address the needs of the child.
The system of methods used in this particular study appears to be research based. In social research randomised controlled trials (RTCs) appear to be the best evidence in terms of answering the “what works” questions. Furthermore evaluations are a method used to settle down attendance and behaviour problems in schools. Most school based evaluations are research obtained demonstration projects. However effect sizes appear to be very small in many cases.
Given that the FGC’s model and the work of the EWS have different methods in their approaches, another methodology that could be used to determine their effectiveness would be Action research. Those methods begin with defining the problem within a given setting and attempting to solve it. The research is designed to improving practice.
In order for this method to be adopted within the frame work of the research, the FGC and the EWS will have to both agree on a study. Then recommendations at the end of the research could inform practice in both areas or determine that one programme is not effective in achieving the joint outcomes with the evidence to support it.
The type of research that is usually being used uses a mixture of observational and interview methods. Furthermore it might also include documents or questionnaires.
Some suggest that this type of research is too subjective and not many will be able to benefit from it.
