In Linda Bamber’s essay, The Woman Reader in King Lear”, the author attempts to prove that women can identify with King Lear through a character which she creates and calls “the Other”. The “Other” is a combination of the evil of sister’s Goneril and Regan and the quiet but otherwise perfect Cordelia. When combined the three women create a force of nature that eventually the King must yield to. Bamber does an excellent job identifying this “Other” by proving that the women combined are not unlike nature itself, breaking the King as the storms broke him. “They are like the rock on which the hero is broken and remade; they are the thing outside the self that cannot be cannot be controlled and cannot be renounced.” She continues that this “Other” gives a drastic contrast to the King, which makes the drama, “…the feminine causes suffering, appears evil, and may actually be evil.” It is when this “Other” brings its force against Lear that he finally breaks down and can no longer rule—in this moment we see the tragedy of the play. The “Other” is also helpful in highlighting the dissatisfaction the King receives in not always getting what he desires. Here I think the argument weakens a little, but still drives the point home. There is a sexual tension that comes to surface between the King and his daughters (most notably in the way that he denounces them, more like lover than father) and allows the King to

Overall, through solid example’s from Lear and contrast to Shakespeare’s other works, Bamber is able to make a solid case for her theory. Certainly it is obvious that the female aspect of the play (even that of a ‘female’ nature) are some to blame in the madness of Lear, but one might also argue that the King’s own poor choices caused his loss of power and eventual madness.

Margot Heinemann in her essay ‘Demystifying the Mystery of State’: King Lear and the World Upside Down, the author proves that King Lear is a political play. Through examples and contrasts of other Shakespearean works, Heinemann shows that King Lear is about individual loss of power as well as the “the complete breakdown of a social and political system…”
Heinemann believes that by creating contrasts between absolutes, that the problem of the times is highlighted. She supports this with examples that show the contrast of madness and folly in the King, clothes and nakedness, sight and blinding, power and justice and injustices and, of course, the have and have-nots. She works with theories of upside-down power throughout the essay and pushes this point to the end where she claims the ultimate show of this upside-down world is the King becoming the fool. This essay forces the reader to reimagine Lear through a political lens and realize that it is indeed probable and perhaps even fitting today.

    With such powerful language and intonation, it sometimes is difficult for me to remember that King Lear is but an aged man, biased and occasionally foolish. In act two, he finally ostracizes Regan and Goneril by making sexist comments intending to wound both women. His speech has three distinct parts: distinguishing men from women, making a prayer for the present, and giving his threat for the future. Lear divides the world into two parts, one with animals, and the other with humans. The latter category is then again subdivided into men and women. He sees the section of men as like beasts, but women to almost have just a superficial view of the world by only caring about looks instead of substance. He mocks Regan and Goneril with their clothing- something he calls “gorgeous”, but it “scarcely keeps [them] warm.” Lear must consider himself to be like a beast in that he acts as he sees practical, like keeping knights that stay loyal to him as the only family he has left, which are “a reservation to be followed with such a number.” I think he is stumbling over what to say the entire speech, with interrupted sentences, apostrophe, and the use of prose, which might indicate feeling rushed and lack of time in which he would usually have spoken poetry. By discussing sexism, it seems to be an easy play of Lear’s to make that will surely injure Regan and Goneril, even though both are quite masculine in their powers. In the next section, he creates another sexist divide by assigning different responses to hardship per gender. Even his speech shows his condescending beliefs for women by using the soft ‘w’ sound alliteratively in line 319. “…women’s weapons, water drops,” are contrasted with what Lear wants- “noble anger” that is more suited to him as a man. Even the thought of crying would “stain [his] man’s cheeks” in an act of weakness. While characterizing grief as womanly, Lear again associates being female as a deficiency in that one…

    Shakespeare in Lear, presents the notion that characters in great authority force suffering upon others in an effort to retain power, admiration, and status. Initially, Lear himself demonstrates this, appallingly treating Cordelia with an irrational snap judgement when he is embarrassed in court by his youngest daughters silence and lack of praise; “Here I disclaim all my parental care.” (1:1:107) This unjust sentence is highly ironic, especially for the audience, as dramatically we see transparent farce of Gonerill and Regan’s dedications of love, and the total truth of Cordelia’s.     Female sexuality (or the lack of it) is a motif Shakespeare uncovers multiple times throughout the play. Besides Lear’s three daughters Cordelia, Regan and Goneril there are no other women in the play. Gloucester, Lear and Kent are all unmarried. Yet Lear has this obsession with women, or rather with the ungodliness he associates them with. Lear’s rage towards women begins when he demands for an undying confession of love from each of his daughters; the winner shall get the largest piece of land.     In King Lear, these aspects are seen well as Gonerill and Regan take their power more seriously than anything else. Lear had thought that by giving Gonerill and Regan power, it would automatically be handed to their husbands, as they were the men, and they were to rule. Yet, it is noticed that Gonerill and Regan take complete advantage of this situation and make every attempt to control this power. This is seen in Act 2 scene 4, when Gonerill and Regan are first seen in Lear’s eyes as pairing up and realizes them for their evilness. Regan and Gonerill get rid of Lear’s soldiers and make Lear so weak that he is literally helpless.     The play presents to us several variations of characters. Firstly, there are good characters such as Cordelia and Albany. However, just because we determine from their loyalty and honestly that they are good, they still contain a human frailty. For Cordelia this is her honesty. It is both a virtue and a vice. When Lear instigates the love contest he already proposes to give Cordelia the most opulent third of the kingdom but in order to feed his ego, sets his three daughters up to express their love for him. Cordelia replies with instead of exaggerated declarations of love such as her sisters “dearer than eye sight” and a love more than “all other joys”, she says “I love you as my bond requires, no more, no less”. In saying this Cordelia shows a self righteous pride and what can be argued is a certain level of arrogance. This human frailty in her displays that she values honesty highly but the consequence is her banishment from her father’s kingdom. Similarly Albany, although eventually a good character, is chided by Goneril for his “milky gentleness”. This we see is his human frailty, the weakness that allows him to be pushed around by his commanding and manipulative wife Goneril. However, soon Albany discovers strength and stands up to his wife, as he finds her and Regan’s actions morally reprehensible when Regan and Cornwall pluck out Gloucester’s eyes. In this way it is true to a large extent that Shakespeare dramas study human frailty which is present even in inherently ‘good’ characters.…
