Summary: The foundation of our democracy is based upon the sacredness of human life. Hence, to deliberately take a life is not acceptable. Abortion, which indeed takes away life, is no exception. It's tolerance is an attack on democracy.…
The Great Depression was a time of widespread poverty, unemployment, and homelessness lasting from 1929 to 1941. The events leading up to the Great Depression formed a snowball effect. During the Roaring 20s, the wealth was not being shared with the workers. Wages were not keeping up with rising prices, so workers were unable to pay for goods. As fewer products were being sold, factories had to let go of workers.…

The Great Depression, a world-wide crisis of economic loss and failures, more specifically in the United States. The time period started from the year 1930 to 1940 with Herbert Hoover as president. During this time, stock markets were crashing, businesses were closing as well as banks. Most of the American population were homeless, and people were starving and poor from unemployment. There was a need for sources like electricity as well as the need for jobs to change unemployment rates (Smiley, 2008).…
I asked my dad what he thought the best time for America was and he said it was when everyone was granted the right to vote (not denied by gender or race). He said this was a good time for America because it gave everyone a chance to choose who they wanted to be ruled under or who they wanted to represent them as a state. He liked how the American people could vote for someone whom they agreed views with. Furthermore, he said that another reputable time for America was the economy after the 2008 recession. During the 2008 recession, many Americans were losing jobs, money, and affordability of the necessities to live like food and shelter. Anyhow, after the recession, people were getting their jobs back and were able to stimulate the…
Throughout The Odyssey, the Greek vocabulary word metis holds the most importance because of the clever, life-saving decisions Odysseus makes. Throughout the epic, Odysseus is faced with several challenges to overcome. His quick-witted (wily) personality and intelligence is what eventually gets him out of these situations. For example, on the island of the lotus-eaters, Odysseus’ men become addicted to the louts flowers and intend to stay on the island forever. Odysseus was smart enough not to eat the flowers and to bring his men back aboard the ship: “But I brought them back, back/to the hollow ships, and streaming tears—I forced them” (9.110-111). Odysseus seems to always know the right thing to do in every situation. When the Cyclops Polyphemus…
“Historically, recessions have developed over time. This one seems to have developed overnight (Partilla).” This thought is thought to stress the fact that while recessions are at times rare, when they do occur they can have a devastating effect. A recession or economic downturn is defined as a period is temporary economic decline during in which trade and industrial activity are reduced. Economic recession is generally accompanied by a rise in unemployment, high inflation, and decline of the housing market. Otherwise known as “The Great Recession,” the recession in the United States from the year 2007 to 2009 negatively impacted the United States economy by significantly altering the US’s labor market, unemployment rate and recovery potential.…

*The great second recession, and the aftermath of the events will never be ignored. The antecedent events of 2008 were highly questionable, as to why they transpired. As of present day, the United States is still amongst a financial slump. Again, the rippling effects in the recession of 2008 are still felt both near and far. We as American, never believed that such a financial atrocity would ever occur yet again after the financial issues that the United States observed in the 1930’s. The National Bureau of Economic Research indicated the the actual recession of 2008 took place in December of 2007 (Isidore, 2008). The York Times released a statement in September of 2010, “The…
Recessions are generally believed to be caused by a widespread drop in spending. Beginning in the United States in December 2007 the industrialized world has been undergoing a recession, a pronounced deceleration of economic activity. The financial crisis has been linked to reckless and unsustainable lending practices resulting from the deregulation and securitization of real estate mortgages in the United States. Whatever the cause, there is one question that has been getting the least amount of attention; what effects does the economy have on our health as a society? The World Health Organization has defined health as being "a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity”. So,…
The Recession of 2008 caused widespread panic and distress globally. Trillions of dollars were lost during this time. It was a frightening time for people because they were unsure of what was to come regarding their situations. These losses of money lead to a decrease in consumer spending, which decreased the GDP. This then invoked companies to lower salaries and cut large numbers of their employees. The huge loss of jobs made the unemployment rate skyrocket. All of these consequences of the Recession put many people under stress and lead to an increase in poverty in working class families. The documentary, Inside Job, covered the causes and consequences of the Recession in great depth. There are many underlying causes that lead to…
