The song “Baby It’s Cold Outside” was originally written by Frank Loesser but the version I chose was from Glee sung by Kurt and Blaine. This song represents how a holiday like Christmas is supposed to be spent with a person you love and so in the song the singer is talking to someone special and is asking them to stay for a while longer. The poetic devices they use are out there, I really can’t stay, and baby it’s cold outside. The song has a rhythm to it. The song rhymes a lot. There is a meaning to how the rhythm and rhymes are shown in the song.…

Randall Jarrell, poet, critic, essayist, and former Poet Laureate of the United States, was born in 1914 in Nashville Tennessee and attended Vanderbilt University in that same city. There, Jarrell received his BA and MA studying under John Crowe Ransom and Robert Penn Warren. His poetry is influenced by W.H. Auden and Robert Frost and often uses what poets call “the common dialogue of Americans.” He passed away October 14th, 1965.…
Both swallowed in their job, the janitor in “Jorge the Church Janitor Finally Quits” by Martin Espada and the secretary in “The Secretary Chant” by Marge Piercy feel unappreciated and lost as employees. Jorge is “outside…of [Americans] understanding” and The Secretary is lost in her work and compares herself to objects such as her “hips are a desk.” The employees from these poems have become hidden behind their duties and are slowly sinking into the unknown.…
A tattoo is like poetry, because there is always more to the story than what meets the eye! The sonnet “First Poem for You” by Kim Addonizio is a riveting piece of poetry that uses symbolization to help guide the readers to understand the emotions and feelings the woman has towards her partner. Visual and tactile imagery used within this poem helps readers interpret the meaning of the poem. The theme is longevity and the true meaning of a relationship. In Addonizio “First Poem for You,” Addonizio utilizes literary elements to develop the story and detail a fictional character that is in love with a man that has permanent tattoos. Upon analyzing the symbols, visual imagery and theme throughout this poem the readers will better comprehend the poem to its entirety; these elements symbolize permanence, which is the meaning of the entire poem.…
In The Beach Boys song “God Only Knows,” the singer declares his everlasting love and contemplates life without his partner. Several literary elements demonstrate that the lyrics could very well serve as poetry. The song is told from the first person point of view. "Poets who write in the first-person point of view allow the reader to experience the imagery of a poem through the direct perception of the narrator" (Cascio). These lyrics are written so tenderly and deeply that you feel like a private and intimate moment is personally shared with you.…
Nothing about life is easy; you work, you try, and sometimes you fail regardless of your efforts. Some people believe in reincarnation, others in some form of an afterlife, and some believe you only have one life. Believing that you’re only able to live one life could benefit the person because they take that idea and they accept it. In that acceptance they choose to live everyday as if it were there last, so that by their last breath they can say they had a good life, even with the many struggles and heartache. Most people live with the belief that we only have one life; although life is a gift with endless possibilities, it's…
The works we studied within Creative Writing were all helpful in creating my own works to submit to the class. Throughout all of the reading, many of the works inspired me in different ways, whether it was short story plot ideas or word usage in the poems. While crafting my work for the final portfolio, I reviewed many of the poems from our poetry packet in an effort to find inspiration and to create new interesting images. I took the most inspiration for my formal poem, which I found most difficult to write. One of the poems that was most useful to me was Jilly Dybka’s “Memphis, 1976.” Dybka’s poem follows the sestina form; I also wrote my last poem in this form, so it helped to follow the form by looking at her poem as an example. Dybka’s…
Lorna Dee Cervantes' poem, “Poema para los Californios Muertos” (“Poem for the Dead Californios”), is a commentary on what happened to the original inhabitants of California when California was still Mexico, and an address to the speaker's dead ancestors. Utilizing a unique dynamic, consistently alternating between Spanish and English, Cervantes accurately represents the fear, hatred, and humility experienced by the “Californios” through rhythm, arrangement, tone, and most importantly, through use of language.…
American Idiot is a song written by the band Green Day criticising America’s response to the September 11 attacks. They attack the government & the media even going as far as to call the government rednecks. I chose this song because it offers up several controversial topics such as September 11 and the media subliminally controlling the American public through television and newspapers. Through-out the song Green Day use thought provoking language that really gets you thinking.…
The Carousel music serves as a symbol of untouchable childhood memories that will never change even when you grow up. When Holden and Phoebe get closer to the Central Park Carrousel, Holden hears the Carrousel music; “It played that same song about fifty years ago when I was a little kid” (Salinger 231). The hyperbole of “fifty years” represents Holden's love of childhood which for him seems so long ago. Holden misses his childhood and all that comes with it. Holden is saying that his childhood was “fifty years ago” because now he has to be an adult and take on responsibility. The repetition of playing the same song reflects the carrousel going around and around, which illustrates Holden staying in one place with his life. This depicts that…
In the poem “To This Day” by Shane Koyczan he shows that people that get bullied constantly aren’t able to blow stuff off as easy as others. In the poem he shows that some people need motivation and help. He shows this by stating in the poem,”We are not abandoned cars stalled out… and if in some way we are don’t worry we only got out to walk and get gas”. Gas could symbolize getting help from someone they know and trust, or could be trying to get help with therapy or things of that nature. Another meaning could be that they need to get motivation to keep going from something. The dark background colors could mean that they need better things to happen to get motivation from.…
Motherhood: a phenomenon as old as time, each experience as unique and different from the others. Many female poets, such as Sylvia Plath, Gwen Harwood, and Judith Wright, have used poetry to reflect on their own reality and their many complex emotions towards motherhood. Although the poets express their relationship with the concept differently, using a variety of techniques, such as imagery, metaphors, expressive language and symbolism, similar joys and struggles of motherhood are revealed.…
The original Hotel California is not a place; it is a similarity for the west drift music industry, and its impact on the gifted performers who get themselves entrapped in its sparkling web. The stanza that incorporates, "Welcome to the Hotel California," is rehashed twice in the tune in distinctive settings. Another allegory utilized the inn to symbolize a trap from which one can never get away. These similitudes make the tune all the more charming. Expression as a rule alludes essentially to the decision of the words, their course of action, and the power. The song closes with word usage that makes a feeling of direness, and sadness and proceeds with the allegory of being caught. "Feast," is compared with, "monster," demonstrating the duality…
“Anger is a basic human emotion that is experienced by all people” (Mills, 2005). It is a natural response that is triggered when someone feels hurt or mistreated. Although, it is not just a clear-cut emotion that consists of one general feeling that is the same for everyone. The levels of anger that a person feels may not always be identical and there are varying degrees of responses that someone can express when they are experiencing this sentiment. How often a person gets angry, how intensely they feel this emotion, and how long it lasts varies for every individual. This results in a range of intensity of the anger that they express. How a person decides to handle this emotional signal can be a decisive factor as to any consequential effects…
