In the conclusion of this article Budd makes reference to a replica of Stonehenge in Ontario. This display was made of cars and is appropriately called “Autohenge”. Unfortunately, the “Autohenge” display experienced rust and had to be torn down in 2001. The mention of this sparked my interest to research other replicas of Stonehenge. “Carhenge” is also replica of England's Stonehenge located near the city of Alliance, Nebraska in the United States. Carhenge is constructed of vintage American automobiles, that are all painted gray to resemble stones. It consists of 39 automobiles arranged in a circle measuring about 95 feet in diameter. The creator used cars that were of the 1950’s and 1960’s era because he saw that they had a monolithic structure that resembled the stones of Stonehenge. Some of the cars are buried around 5 foot deep so that they are standing vertically. The arches have been formed by welding some of the automobiles onto the other vertically placed ones. The heelstone is a 1962 Cadillac. This display started out as a memorial for the creator’s father, but developed into work of art. Like the Merry Maids, Carhenge is an off the road attraction that would have to be seeked out. The Nebraska Department of highways was opposed to Carhenge initially, but later the city of Alliance became the owner and made it a preservation. It certainly must aid awareness of the greater monument of Stonehenge that some may have never been introduced to
