The Character of Dee in “Everyday Use” In Alice Walker “Everyday Use”, Dee (Wangero Kemanjo) is the main character. Dee is the opposite of her sister Maggie. Her education is very important to her and it has caused her to separate from her family. Dee has decided to go against her own family heritage and traditions to for take another heritage. She is characterized by being educated, unappreciative, and very spoiled. Dee believes that her family is poor, uneducated, and doesn’t understand their heritage. Dee had a college education, but she wasn’t educated about her heritage. Her mother called her Dee, but she replied and said “Not ‘Dee.’ Wangero Leeewanika Kemanjo!” (25). She also said that Dee was dead and that she could no longer bear the name of people that oppressed her. She feel that way because her mom has two kids, not witty, bad singer, does hard family work, she’s poor, and uneducated. Maggie lets Dee control her, she’s poor, got burned by her previous house falling down, can quilt, and uneducated. Dee is mean, rich, selfish, and educated. She’s spoiled because she’s not used to being told no. She always gets what she wants and everything is her way or no way. For example, she asked for a desk and chair that was in her mother’s house because she wanted to use it in her and Hakim Akbar’s house, but they were still being used in her mother’s home. Another example is when she asked her mother for the quilts that her grandmother had quilted. Her mother finally decides to tell Dee no because they were for Maggie. When her mom told her no, she got upset and began to pout, simply because she’s not used to being told no. Dee felt that Maggie wouldn’t appreciate the quilts, Maggie ended up being nice and letting Dee have
