Alice Walker's "Everyday Use" is the story of a woman, referred to as Mama, and her two daughters, Maggie and Dee. Mama and Maggie live together in their small home in a rural area. Dee has gone to college in a big city and is coming for a visit. Maggie is painfully self conscious, "chin on chest, eyes on ground, feet in shuffle" with scars on her body from a house fire. Dee has always been scornful of her family's simple way of living and has been greatly influenced by her time away. Walker uses Maggie to explore the ideas of a family's heritage and history and, by contrasting her with Dee, voices a concern that in our search for our roots perhaps we are losing important aspects of our heritage.…

In Alice Walker’s “Everyday Use,” one of the characters, Dee visits her mother and sister after being gone for many years at college, from the view of the reader, the reunion seems distant and the character’s relationships amongst each other strained as Dee now looks upon her family with condescending disdain. Throughout the course of the story the author expertly exploits the history of the central family in an effort to explain how they’ve become who they are. Walker uses a combination of allusion and character interaction to illustrate the theme which covers power of education to split people apart and bring them together. Walker’s use of allusion throughout the story is not extensive, though when it is used it takes full advantage of…

In the short story, "Everyday Use," Alice Walker teaches us lessons on true inheritance; what it is and who can receive it. Two hand stitched quilts become the center of conflict in the story. They are also used to symbolize the true inheritance. Like a quilt, a person's world view is made up of events, circumstances and influences that shape how they see and respond to the world. "Everyday Use" is a story of two worlds in conflict. Mama, acting as the narrator, guides us through the interaction of the two very different worlds embodied in her daughters.…

The theme of “Everyday Use” (1973), by Eudora Welty, is the impact of the past on the present. Mama Johnson and her daughter Maggie await the arrival of the older daughter, Dee. Mama Johnson recalls the various allowances she provided for Dee. Dee receives a formal education and the finer clothes she prefers to wear, unlike Mama Johnson and Maggie. Dee has two fundamental issues. Her family embarrasses her, and she is accustomed to getting her way, although Dee is never satisfied. She has high ideals, while Mama Johnson and Maggie are simpler people. Mama Johnson recalls a time when Dee “used to read to us without pity; forcing words, lies, other folks’ habits, whole lives upon us two, sitting trapped and ignorant…

“Everyday Use” is a short story by Alice Walker that tells the story of a mother and two sisters who are finally together after being apart for a long time. Walker describes two characters who were both born and raised together, but they go separate ways and therefore manifest a different understanding of heritage. One of the sisters, Dee, is described as a very selfish and materialistic woman who allows other people’s opinions and her “understanding” affect her views on heritage. On the contrary, Maggie is a traditional woman who has a robust understanding of what heritage really is. Though these characters were born and raised the same, there is a disparity between their views on whether or not material items are a necessity to recollect…

“Everyday Use” by Alice Walker uses different characters to explore the shift in values of women’s role in society. As Wangero’s change of culture and appearance forms into a strange being that sticks out from the simple life of Mama and Maggie, it becomes clear how time and space transforms one’s family values as well. The opposition causes Wangero to lose her identity and place in the family; therefore, Walker’s usage of first person narratives suggests that one might lose the true meaning of heritage, but his or her life improves socially by the modification of time…

The core conflicts that is represented in the “Everyday Use” story is Maggie and Mama on one side against Dee about their rural African American heritage. In case, Mama and Maggie have various objects (i.e. butter churn, dasher, and quilt) around the house used and created for everyday purposes that they considered part of their lively hood. On the other hand, Dee sees the significance of various objects around the house as artifacts rather than to use for its intended purposes. For example, the dasher and butter churn carved by their Uncle Buddy by hand should be admired. But, core conflict occurs in the story as when Dee wanted the two quilt made by their female relatives (i.e. great-grandmother,…

The mother had a strong family history concept, meanwhile, she also valued the fighting spirit. In the condition of African cultural identification, Dee had this fearless and fighting spirit that she admired. As the mother said in the story, “Who can even imagine me looking a strange white man in the eye? It seems to me I have talked to them always with one foot raised in flight, ... Dee, though. She would always look anyone in the eye. Hesitation was no part of her nature” (471). Dee’s characteristic is different compared to her mother. She hopes to get rid of her own destiny and family history, even change her name. The mother, however, only imagine. When she recalls the day Dee burning down the house, she wanted to ask her “Why don’t you do a dance around the ashes?” (471). This sentence is ironic that she thinks Dee is too selfish because she does not care about her sister who still in the burning house. In spite of this, when she heard Dee has changed her name, she still trying to adapt to her new name. However, when she found Dee trying to take the quilts for decoration but not knowing the real meaning of them, she was disappointed.
