Losing a relationship with a parent can cause many emotional feelings to run through a person's body. Nieve wants to get sick so they will not take her mother away. She is afraid she will never see her again. Guerra writes, “I will die if they take my mother away. I will die of sadness” (7). This shows that without her mom she will not be able to survive. Nieve would have to find another way to adapt to that change in her life. Nieve was living with her dad for a while, which was torture. She was happy to finally move back with her mom. Guerra writes, “as far as I’m concerned, it's for the best. He can't hit me anymore and now we don't have to wait for his consent to leave” (10). Living with her father has changed her physically. She was never used to starving herself and getting abused when she was living with her mom. …show more content…
Leaving is not always an option.
In fact, some people are forced to leave. Nieve is being forced to move with her dad because her mom is being sent away. Guerra writes, “my mother and I have to say good-bye right then and there. There’s no time” (25). This shows that Nieve does not want to leave her mom because she is not used to being with her dad. This is a emotional change for the both of them because it was always just them two since Nieves birth. The stay at Nieves dad house is not going as she planned. She is not used to having many rules. Guerra writes, “I wanted to write when we were in the car, but he took the notebook from me and told me we had to sleep” (27). Nieves dad is controlling. Not being able to write is a mental change for her because she can not express
herself.
Writing is a way to relieve stress. Nieve has started a new school and has not found time to write. Guerra writes, “I go everywhere with it. I bring it home, hidden between my other notebooks” (121). Writing is a technique Nieves uses to keep herself calm. Her notebook is her best friend, without it there is no Nieve. The new school she is attending had been keeping her occupied. She has to sneak to write in her journal. Guerra writes, “I haven't had enough peace of mind to write again. It's been a real nightmare” (150). Nieve is not used to this change in her life. Not being able to write is stressful for her because she is used to writing her feelings down on paper everyday.
Multiple changes in a person's life can change them physically, mentally, and emotionally. Some might say Nieve can express herself in others way, not only through writing. Nieve moving back and forth from one parent to another, starting a new school, not being able to write in her journal, and getting abused by her dad has changed her in many ways. Going through many challenges can help a person mature in a positive way.
