ACT 2 SCENE 7
ACT 2 SCENE 7; PAGE 57
Flashback to Elaine’s childhood with Father again
Same situation as Act 2 Sc 6, but the roles are reversed

Father insists on using physics to make Elaine eat her porridge even though it is not fun to her as a child Father is quite forceful and not patient with Elaine
- He wants to get the job over and done with
Father asks Elaine what she wants to be, but Elaine answers what her Mother does with her. Elaine is comfortable with what Mother does with her and how Mother knows what Elaine likes.
“Black hole” VS “Choo-choo train”
• Father uses very complicated things to get Elaine to eat, but Mother just has to use a simple thing and
Elaine likes it
ACT 2 SCENE 7; PAGE 58
“Big black hole”

(Unenthusiastically)
• Is Father unwilling because he thinks this is stupid or because Elaine prefers Mother?
“Now will you open your mouth?”
• Father wants to get over and done with it, but Elaine wants to play
“Just eat the damn porridge.”
• Father shows that he has no patience to play with Elaine but he does not understand that just asking
Elaine to eat will not work.
• Father expects Elaine to act like an adult
ACT 2 SCENE 7; PAGE 58
“Just…open your mouth and eat. Eat!”
• Father does not apologize for using a vulgar in front of his child
“outrage in her eyes”
Elaine is a very stubborn child
Father says ‘good girl, Elaine’ even though she did not willingly eat it and father had to shove the spoon in her mouth
• Shows that Father is relieved that this is going to be
