Everytime Pluto: A Short Story
Everytime Pluto came by with the cook, I would hold my breath. I haven't eaten a morsel in nearly three days but I refuse to give into his attempts.
I could hear their steps as they approched me. I immeditalety held my breath.
"Doesn't this smell delighful, Proserpina? Would you like a taste?"
I ingored the temptation. Maybe if I continued to ingore him, he would let me go out of anger.
Several days have passed. I was beginning to feel depressed-the underworld was a dark and dreary

Unwilling to give up, Pluto tried one last time to offer Proserpina a bite, of something to eat, which she kindly declined. All Proserpina longed for was fruit, from her mother's own garden, and so, that is what Pluto searched for. But, sadly, all he could find was a withered old pomegranate, which he eagerly presented it to her. Proserpina knew she could not eat the pomegranate, so she decided to just smell it, but, before she knew it her teeth were sinking into the withered fruit's flesh. Subsequently, after Proserpina tasted to pomegranate, Quicksilver took Proserpina and brought her above ground. With every step she took the grass and grain grew, and all the animals in the land came to feast upon the green, freshly grown, food they had been without since Proserpina was gone. In the opening paragraph of Kay Boyle's Astronomer's Wife, Boyle depicts a woman who is oppressed of an equal, intelligent conversation with her spouse. Mrs. Ames sees to all matters of running a successful household, while the astronomer sleeps late and is a loner. His profession makes it clear that he spends a lot of time in thought and alone in the dark at night. Boyle explains, "He was a man of other things, a dreamer. At times he lay still for hours, at others he sat upon the roof behind his telescope, or wandered down the pathway to the road and out across the mountains." Since the astronomer is often in his own world, Mrs. Ames is expected to cater to his needs. "That man might be each time the new arching wave, and woman the undertow that sucked him back, were things she been told by his silence were so." This quote exemplifies how involved in his work the astronomer is. Whenever he is on the brink of a brilliant idea, she interrupts his train of thought. The characters in this novel have all shared a tragic tale with each of them sacrificing something for the better. For example, after Mariam is sentenced to death for killing Rasheed , in her final moments “Mariam wished for so much … Yet as she closed her eyes, it was not regret any longer but a sensation of abundant peace that washed over her. She thought of her entry into this world, the harami child of a lowly villager, an unintended thing, a pitiable, regrettable accident. A weed. And yet she was leaving the world as a women who had loved and been loved back. She was leaving it as a friend, a guardian, A mother” (329). This quote is important because all Mariams life she felt like she was not worth anything. But what was tragic was the fact that she loved this family so much she was willing to sacrifice her own life, happiness, and a chance to love again. Mariams realization before her death was sad, because the fact that she was about to face her end and the only thing she could think of was how one family made her believe that she was a person and deserved happiness and love. Additionally, when Mariam was at the hospital with laila, and laila was giving birth to her son zalmai, she didn’t scream once …”Mariam saw now the sacrifices a mother made. Decency was but one. She thought ruefully of nana, of the sacrifices that she to had made. Nana, who could have given her away, or tossed her in a ditch somewhere and run. But she hadn’t. Instead, nana had endured the shame of being a harami, had shaped her life around the thankless task of raising Mariam and, in her own, loving her” (256). This quote was meaningful because Mariam never really understood why nana did some of the things she did. she always questioned if nana really loved her, and if the things she did was in Mariams best interest. But here at this moment she realizes that nana did love her , and everything she did was for Mariam. Unlike jalil who wouldn’t claim Mariam as…
