The way I would describe the benefits of evidence-based nursing to a friend or a family member is that evidence-based practice is a practice that has been examined and proven to work. One of the advantages of evidence-practice is high-quality care which improved the patient outcomes. Another benefit of Evidenced practice is cost savings compared to the practice that is based on trial and error, tradition, and believes. Evidenced-based practice enables resources to be used efficiently, resulting in cost savings and quality care. patient outcomes. For example, one of the current evidenced-practice in nursing is the maintenance of chest port potency. Maintenance of chest port is crucial because without proper maintenance it can cause harm to the patient. It is important for nurses to be competence in the assessment and care of anything inserted or attached to the patient. “Evidenced prove that stripping and milking are not necessary to maintain chest tube patency and probably do more harm than good” (Flynn et al., 2015).
Hourly rounding is another practice that is based on evidence and has been proven to increase patient care by decreasing patient using call light, decreases fall and improves overall patient satisfaction. The need for pain medication, toileting, room temperature adjustment, repositioning help, wound dressing assistance and much more increase the use of call light which can cause patient falls if call light is not answered promptly. With hourly rounding, patients use of call light is limited which would decrease fall and increase patient satisfaction (Giomuso, 2014). Some of the reasons why more current nursing practice is not based on evidence include beliefs, education, confidence, time, attitudes, learning from colleagues, and resources.
Healthcare organizations can also be a barrier why evidence nursing is not practice. For instance, if there is no administrative support and resources it would be difficult for nurses to know what is new and how to practice the new evidence practice. For evidence-based practice to be successful, organizations and their leaders, have to support the culture of EBP. The practice of Evidenced- based nursing care is essential as it enables nurses to deliver high-quality safer care to patients and the community. EBP also increased continues learning and teamwork. 2015)
