Rituals are described as any action performed according to custom, without understanding the reasons why it is being practised. In modern day practice, ways and methods are available to discredit these believes and carry out duties based on strong scientific evidence. Sound infection control practice should

be based on available evidence and consistent policy implementation by all healthcare professionals. Reports have reiterated the significant costs to patients if best practice standards are not followed (National Audit Office, 2000).
