Evil Vs Evil Short Story
There once was a king who was so bitter and brutal that one of his henchmen yearned for his death. However one day he surprised everyone with an announcement about him starting all over. After his transformation one of his henchmen had the courage to ask him what made him change? And the king answered, “As I was galloping through my forests I caught sight of a fox being chased by a hound. The fox escaped into his hole but not before the hound had bitten into its leg and slammed it for life. Later I rode into a village and saw the same hound there. It was barking at a man. Even as I watched, the man picked up a huge stone and flung it at the dog, breaking its leg. The man had not gone far when he was kicked by a horse. His knee was shattered and he fell to the ground, disabled for life. The horse began to run but it fell into a hole and broke its leg. Reflecting on all that had happened, I thought: ‘Evil begets evil. If I continue in my evil ways, I will surely be overtaken by evil’. So I decided to change”, stated by moralstudies.org. So what does this say about human nature? The king was willing to change to better his kingdom and what people thought of him. Jack represents the snake from Adam and Eve. As soon as the island is corrupted by fear, the first creature is identified as a “snake thing.” The snake thing actually represents the presences of satan in the Garden of Eden. “A snake-thing. Ever so big. He saw it” (Golding 35). Immediately there is something evil spotted on the island. Jack in many way represents the serpent “I went on.     Jack and Ralph symbolizes the brothers Cain and Abel. Cain and Abel were the sons of Adam and Eve and when the brothers both sacrifice something to God, he favors Abel’s sacrifice which angers Cain. Trying to take revenge Cain kills his brother out of jealously. This relates to Ralph and Jack when Ralph is elected chief, and Jack disappears “under a blush of mortification” (23). This leads Jack to jealously making him want to “viciously, with full intention, he hurled his spear at Ralph” (181). Another character is Simon who signifies a Christ figure. One of the way he embodies Christ is confronting the devil, which in the book was the lord of the flies. The lord of the flies was a pig head sacrifice that the hunters left for the beast. Simon confronted the “devil” when is started to talk to him try to persuade Simon to “get back to the others and we’ll forget the whole thing” (142) because they can’t escape the beast for the beast is inside of them. Finally, the whole island itself symbolizes part of the bible. We see it as the Garden of Eden because it is perfect until humans destroy it.     Jack is the oldest of the group. He is a tall, thin, and bony boy with red hair and a freckled face. He symbolizes responsibility, barbaric behavior, evil, and irrational thinking. He symbolizes responsibility because he was responsible for the actions of his group, the hunters. As the head of the hunters, it was his job to make sure they were always on task and that they bring food (meat) for the rest of the group. The natural instinct of any older human being is to comfort the little children when they are scared, frightened, and unsure of their actions. Jack frightens them even more by telling them that there was a beast that they would hunt it down. He made them think that acting maliciously instead of being civil was the way to go. In the end, he set the whole island on fire just to hunt down Ralph so he could kill him.
