EVOLUTION OF LIGHT TECHNOLOGY
Case Study TETA 1507: Technology Management

Group Members: Muhammad Iqbal Adnan Saleem Muhammad Usama Mazhar Kashif Ihsan Khattak Muhammad Imran Anwar

ABSTRACT

Light has started from the sunlight and moonlight, and then the fire has changed the concept of light. Humans made torches from wooden sticks, lamps from rocks, bones and pottery, candles from bee wax, oil lamps and gas lamps but fire was common thing in all these eras which actually produced light. Discovery of electricity made the light enter into new era of technology. Thomas Edison invented the incandescent bulb and then the technology of bulb evolves continuously due to socio cultural and technological trends. Now sophisticated LED bulbs are in the markets which are efficient, cheap, long lasting and reliable. Invention of bulb had great impact on the society because it increased working hours, workplace safety, home safety, leisure hours and leisure activities. In this research paper we have examined the evolution of light from the starting of life on earth, and then the journey of light from natural light sources to sophisticated artificial sources of light and light systems.

PREFACE
Studying the basic concepts of Technology Management as a part of the course of the International Master’s degree program at TUT motivated us to select this case study topic as an assignment task. This paper discusses the concepts of “Evolution of light technology”, its phases and the latest trends and technologies that are related to it.

We would like to thank Dr. Dedehayir Ozgur for the knowledge sharing and guidance throughout the process of our work. Tampere, May 2013 Muhammad Iqbal Adnan Saleem Muhammad Usama Mazhar Kashif Ihsan Khattak Muhammad Imran Anwar

Christmas lights were first thought of as an idea by Thomas Edison during Christmas time in 1880, when instead of using candles to light the tree (very dangerous), Edison used red, white, and blue lights of his own invention to decorate the tree. The tradition has stuck, and every year around Christmas time, people decorate their trees with lights, Today, the lights are more advanced than they were back then. In the 1880’s, the lights were incandescent light bulbs. We still use those today, but now we also have light-emitting diodes (LED). The tradition has not changed, but the technology and light behind it has.…

The invention of the lightbulb was arguably one of the most important in recent human history. It also was however, perhaps one of the most detrimental things to modern society. As we all depend on light to function now at all hours of the day. For all of the problems that the lightbulb solved, it gave rise to just as many. Although some may argue that humanity is better off with this invention, there are a select few who refute this claim and stick to saying that humanity’s invention of the lightbulb was only the beginning of a long line of environmentally foolish mistakes that we are still making today.…

“The amount of light in the sky increases an average of about 6% every year”. The author uses statistics on the increase of artificial light to represent the amount of money that is wasted annually. “Much of this light is wasted energy, which means wasted dollars”. This particular sentence demonstrates that too much light is too much waste. In fact the light pollution has become a problem that cities and towns are making changes.. “North America and Europe are changing to LEF streetlights, which offer dramatic possibility for controlling wasted lights.”…

light, or light-emitting diode, emits light when activated and passes energy through a semiconductor to produce light. They also use phosphor, and everyday people are finding new materials to make it. (Vakil). An L.E.D. light draws heat from the power away from it with a heat sink, a passive device that absorbs the heat produced and dissipates it into the surrounding environment in order to keep L.E.D. lights from burning out. (Learn About LED Bulbs). An L.E.D. bulb gives about 100-110 lumens per watt. They last about 35,000-100,000 hours.(Vakil).…
