Religion was very important to all of the Aztecs.
Each god, goddess, or lord had their own temple that people worshiped in. Some of the important gods and goddess were Huitzilopochtli (God of War), Tlaloc (God of Rain and Water), Chicomecoatl (Goddess of Corn), and Quetzalcoatl (God of Life and Nature). They believed that the gods or goddesses had control over everything. So, the Aztec people had altars in their homes to worship these gods.
The Aztecs spoke in the Nahuatl language. Their writing system was with glyphs. Each of the glyphs represented a part of a word, a person, place, an object, or an idea. These glyphs were written on long sheets of cloth, pieces of tree bark, or an animal
skin.
The Aztecs’ empire was built on an island in the middle of Lake Texcoco. Since their city was in the middle of Lake Texcoco, the Aztecs built roads over the waterways which were called causeways. These causeways helped the Aztecs women bring their weaves and other merchants to the large market.
With 200 years in power, the Aztecs were conquered by a Spanish explorer named Herman Cortes. He conquered the Aztecs in 1519 C.E. The Spanish continued to rule until 1821, when Mexico got their independence from Spain. Many of the Aztec sites are still standing today.
