EXAMINATION MALPRACTICES AS THREATS TO QUALITY ASSURANCE IN EDUCATION IN NIGERIA,

OGUNDEPO, A. O. Background to the study. Examination is one of the ways through which students’ academic achievements are measured. It is a means of assessing students’ academic abilities with a view to taking decision on their progression on the academic ladder and determining their suitability for position of responsibilities (Ogundepo, Olatayo, and Akinteye 2009). A student would be adjudged to have achieved proficiency in certain skills after having passed examination set on courses on the skills or instructions to which he has been exposed. He will be issued a certificate stating his level of mastery of such subject(s). In Nigeria and most countries of the world, these certificates readily become meal ticket or a pass to move up academically. In view of the great importance attached to certificates, candidates who are desperate to succeed in life may engage in unwholesome acts to pass examination by all means and at all costs. (see Aliyu and Adeloye 1991, Adeosun, 2007, Lamidi and Adedibu, 2005.) These unwholesome acts aimed at achieving unmerited grades in examinations are known as examination malpractices. The issue of examination malpractices has generated serious discussion and concern in the educational sector than any other issue in Nigeria today. This is because, besides the increasing incidence of the scourge and the means of cheating in examinations, the calibers of people involved are causes for concern. It is not uncommon these days to find teachers, principals, staff of examination bodies, security agents and parents/ guardians involved in examination malpractices.(see Adeosun 2007,Alutu and Aluede 2006, Famiwole 1995, Fatai 2005, Jimoh 2009, Unachukwu and Onunkwo 1999.) The alarming rate and frequency of examination irregularities have become threats to quality control in our educational system so much that the certificates issued are almost

Behavioural genetic scholars purport that certain genetic traits such as low self-control and low empathy can be stimulated by an individual’s dysfunctional environment, thus exacerbating the probability of criminal behaviour (Coyne and Wright, 2015). In support of this notion, a twin study conducted by Christiansen cited in Mednick, Moffitt and Stack (1987 p.74) identified that there was consistently higher criminality in identical twins than in fraternal twins. Out of the 3586 male to male twin pairs, he found that identical twins made up the 52% of those concordant for criminality, whilst fraternal twins made up 22%. Thus, showing the correlation between genetics and shared environments as a determinant of the individuals’ behaviour. According to these findings it may be argued that the high likelihood of criminal behaviour between identical twins was due to them sharing all of their genes, whilst fraternal twins only share 50% of their genes (Coyne and Wright, 2015). In support to this notion, further research conducted by the University of Minnesota examined twins raised apart in unique environments, also showed similarities in personalities, antisocial behaviour and criminality despite the different social environments (Bouchard et al., 1990). It is therefore possible that genes rather than…

In college many students are to partake in an exam. Statistics show that students who are in a higher educated class may cheat on an exam. For example, students who are in business have a higher percentage of cheating than people who are in an engineering class. McCabe had collected data saying that “from 1,946 undergraduates at 16 highly institutions in 1995-1996, including questions about engagement during college in five different cheating behaviors”. An example of one of the behaviors a person might do to cheat is doing work with a classmate when the teacher has instructed to do an individual work. When it comes to cheating there are serious consequences every student should think about before doing it. Academic honesty is very important when attending college and especially when taking an exam.…

“Cheating has become so common, experts say, That it often goes unreported and unpunished,” said by Zernike in the Article,”With Students Cheating on the Rise, More Colleges are Turning to Honor Codes.” Without a doubt cheating has become more prevalent is both colleges and high schools. However, some people may question if certain types of cheating are okay and not dishonest and others dishonest. For example, some people may think copying a homework assignment is not a big deal and dishonest while other people think that cheating on exams is dishonest. In addition, some people may resort to cheating when they are not too aware of the material they are trying to learn when it comes to being tested and others do it for the good grade, not because they don’t know it. Also, many studies and surveys have been conducted at various school and I have noticed from the free responses that people are only attending school for the good grade and not to learn. In recent surveys conducted at Point Loma High School, have shown that cheating is a spreading epidemic common…

In our societies today we always face the stress of being better. I believe academic cheating is a response to that stress. Ideally, the study environment should be designed according to the student’s individual capabilities and strengths. However, as Marilyn French (1985:387) once put it into words “Only extraordinary education is concerned with learning; most is concerned with achieving: and for young minds, these two are very nearly opposite.”.…
