Within sociology there are many different many sociological perspectives on the role of the family, however I believe that the Marxist view on the role of the family is most critical. Marxists believe that the sole purpose of family within society is to serve the ruling class i.e. ‘Bourgeoisie’. Marxists believe that the current economic system is exploitive towards the proletariat as it keeps profit margins at adequate standards whist exploiting the primitive, laborious, nature of the proletariat.
Furthermore sociologist argue that the reproductive role of the family only benefits the ruling class as it creates a future workforce for them, whilst the ruling class family creates legitimate heirs who inherit property from their forefathers and perpetuate the wealth and power within their bloodline. The laborious proletariat are unconsciously aiding their exoneration from blame. This concept of the exploitation of the proletariat and how the role of the family is in reality to serve the ruling class is intertextual in Frederick Engels idea on the inheritance of private property. They argue that the monogamous bourgeoisie nuclear family developed in order to ensure the inheritance of private property. This was amongst the ruling class as they did not want to publish their methods of invention because of the fear of de-valuing them. Consequently by securing a monogamous relationship they were ensuring that the wealth was being perpetuated within their bloodline. Some Marxist Feminists may also argue that the inheritance of property is patriarchal as it is designed to guarantee and encourage male power as in most cases males were the ones who inherited private property and businesses, whereas women were married off to other rich males. It is this inheritance of private property and reproductive role of the family that is deemed to serve the interests of Capitalism.
