examine the value of sustainable and intergrated approaches to coastal management
Examine the value of sustainable and integrated approaches to coastal management (10 marks)

Sustainable approaches to coastal management are usually soft engineering, they are defences which copy or work alongside natural systems and processes, this means ecosystems remain playing a key role. An example of sustainable coastal management would be at Barton on sea where they use managed retreat at the caravan site, Sustainable approaches are good because they are natural, cheap, environmentally friendly and bottom-up or community driven. However, they are also of a small scale and they usual do not last long (although at times they can be longer lasting) and also consideration has to be taken so that the defences do not give negative impacts on surrounding shorelines, e.g. Bournemouth groins starve Barton on sea of sediment.

Integrated coastal management may include soft options as well as hard defences. This is where the whole of a coast within a sediment cell is managed - it also focuses in not just sea but land to make plans more sustainable. Numerous players/organisations are involved in shoreline management plans – this can be a negative because it can be difficult to coordinate and manage, decisions making is harder/longer, there could be a lack of consistency in the collection and storage of data, its hard to choose which players opinions are more important and also political boundaries don’t match natural ones.
ICZM can be good because the plans are more sustainable and longer lasting, However it can also be very expensive. An example of integrated coastal management is at ‘Beachy head’ to ‘south foreland’ where they use numerous strategies within holding the line and managed retreat, for example they use hard engineering at ‘Jury’s Gap’ to ‘The Suttons’ to improve the standard of protection.

    Walton-On-Naze Case Study

In summary, in response to the question; “How successful are the defences in your chosen area?” I feel that the defences in Walton-on-the-Naze are successful to a certain extent due to the following reasons. Firstly, some resources showed that the defences were socially sustainable while other resources highlighted the fact that they were economically sustainable even if they weren’t aesthetically pleasing. This was also the case for defences that were more environmentally sustainable. The different types of defences all had a varying amount of these 3 categories, some being more successful in one area than another. For example, sea walls are more economically sustainable because, even though they are the most expensive defence, they have the longest lifespan due to the durable material they are constricted from (concrete). However, because of this construction and installation technique, it wouldn’t be environmentally or socially sustainable as it would cause a lot of noise and might deter wildlife from the area temporarily. The defence with the highest level of social sustainability is beach replenishment because it doesn’t visually change the area too much and would help attract tourists to the area. It would also cause limited disturbance to the residents which gives it the social aspect. On the other hand, it isn’t economically sustainable because it wouldn’t be cost effective to replenish the whole coast of Walton as certain areas are more prone to erosion, meaning the…

Coastal management is managing development along the coast in a sustainable way so that it will not be spoiled for future generations and it is a very important to Australians because over 85% of our current population live within 50km of the coast. Furthermore, more than 25% of Australia’s current population lives within three kilometres of the coast. All the human traffic our coastline receives damages the delicate ecosystems that are trying to co-inhabit the area. Foreshore developments such as – high rise buildings, shops, walkways, roads and carparks damage the aforementioned ecosystems which interfere with the natural processes that occur on the coastline. The general public consensus is that the foreshore developments spoil the natural beauty of the coastline and makes it aesthetically displeasing where as others believe that the developments will help people enjoy the various activities the coastline waters and sands offer.…

Sustainability is defined as sustainability well balanced human environment relationships; an optimal balance between environmental, social, and economic qualities ( Steg, 2013). One of the ways in which individuals are becoming more pro-active in protecting the environment is through proactive agroforestry, and sustainability. A current example of this is a resort owned and operated by Jean-Michel Cousteau. This resort features several projects currently running to promote sustainability such as an organic vegetable garden, and reef preservation programs.…

What do you do when mid-latitude cyclones get larger, strong frontal winds are more frequent, and waves and currents get stronger? How can we control high waves and storm surges that drive more sediment transport, permanently changing the coast? Coastal dunes, of all shapes and sizes, are are dense enough to prevent rapid and significant changes. The Coastal Zone Management Act of 1972 specifically calls for the creation and enhancement of dunes in the coastal zone. There is increasing recognition of the variety of dune features that exist at the coast and the interplay between the beach and coastal dunes. The measurements of sand gains and losses in the dunes and the flows of sediment from the beach to the dune have been practiced along many shorelines. The research has led to a series of site-specific descriptions and categorizations of dune types and their interaction with local dynamics. In 2011, the Congress spent 56 million dollars supporting such projects (Coastal Zone Management, 2008). Some of the projects include dune stabilization, the mining and study of dune composition, sand fencing, and beach nourishment. Jetties and groins are being built to capture sand that would normally have been washed miles away. These methods are used all over the world and they help to prevent accelerated shoreline alterations. Preserving the shoreline also protects certain species in the biosphere like Sea Turtles, rare birds, and important plants. These are some of the few wise environmental choices we are making with money these days.…
