In Taking a Stand Against Ageism at All Ages Margaret Gullette (2011) dives into ageism and the effects it is having on society. Her stance is that U.S. society is pushing out older individuals claiming they are “useless”. She also mentions that middle aged people are starting to experience ageism at work as well due to U.S. society being obsessed with youth (Gullette, 2011). Gullette (2011) states in references to older people, “people are likely to be a “burden”, unworthy of resources.” This statement reminded me of the activity we did during the graduate school interview where we decided who should be chosen to replenish the Earth.…

Social norms marginalize senior citizens by treating them with disrepect, making them feel unwelcomed, and generalizing them as if they are all the same. Although society regards senior citizens as slow and full of health issues, they are actually mentally and physically fit. The elderly also present and contribute a lot to the same society that outcasts them. Adolescents also experience ageism as they are constantly told they are too young or not educated enough to do certain things. This causes the diversity of society where your either too old or too young. in society nobody is ever the perfect age. Ageism is defined as prejudice and discrimination against old people. Schafer writes that for the ageist, elderly persons reflect the image of disease, death, and dying as well as a reminder that we all be old one day (2012,pp. 395-396). Another stereotype of the elderly is that they are slow and mentally dysfunctional. All of this is further emphasized by society’s fixation with youth.…

According to text, ageism is defined as prejudice and discrimination against older adults, which reflects a deep uneasiness among young and middle-aged people about growing old. For many, old age symbolizes disease and death, which serves as a reminder that they too may become old and infirm one day. The presence of ageism influences diversity in society because the elderly are the ones afflicted by it. In society today younger generations are being hired to replace experienced older workers because some employers feel that younger workers are more productive (p. 395-396). However, if employers were to only seek younger employees there would be a lack of diversity within working environments.…

According to Schaefer (2012), ageism is a term which refers to prejudice and discrimination against the elderly. “Ageism reflects a deep uneasiness among young and middle-aged people about growing old” (Schaefer, 2012, p. 395). Our society looks to youthfulness as successfulness; therefore, the elderly threaten those who want to be young and successful; thus influencing diversity in society. The elderly are seen as unessential, unneeded, and a constant reminder we one day will be old as well. So we shy away from associating with the elderly; so we do not have a constant reminder of our own ageing and immortality.…

Ageism is the prejudice and discrimination against the elderly. (pg. 395 racial and ethnic groups) Society view the elderly as disease and death and ends up glorifying youth as the ideal thing to be. Most middle age people are upset to be getting older because of these stereotypes about the elderly. 84% of people over the age of 60 have been subjected to ageism whether it was at a job where they were looked at as a liability or just in society itself. Some elderly people deal with discrimination from people who are afraid to get old and see the elderly as a reminder of what they are going to deal with. (pg. 395-396 racial and ethnic groups)…

Ageism involves others being prejudice or discriminating against the elderly. There is so much discrimination of different groups of people. This affects the diversity in society, because it is as though the elderly is their own group. We are not meant to be the same and we do have to eventually pass on. We should really be looking at them as an important piece of history that we have. This group makes the up and coming younger generation grow in an uncomfortable way with having to watch the elderly pass on so quickly. Our elderly numbers are growing each day and this can make their numbers higher than over groups in society.…

After reading chapter 17, there are many stereotypes that are placed on older individuals in our culture. Which can be described by ageism which is defined as the prejudice and discrimination directed at older people. Some examples of the most common stereotypes are that it is almost impossible for the average old person to learn something new, Older workers usually cannot work as effectively as younger works, and that at least one-tenth of the aged are living in long-stay institution such as nursing homes. Each stereotype listed above is completely false. For instance, I work at a urology clinic and most of the workers employed including the doctors are well over 60 years old. In my opinion, each of them are very trustworthy, hardworking,…

The result of this stereotyping is shown in a study conducted by AARP, where “Americans under age thirty-five are more likely to think that “older workers” are less effective, and that ‘old people’ are lonely, miserable, suffering from defective memory, and ‘pretty much alike’” (qtd. in Gullete 58). Raising awareness to reduce these depictions or displaying elders in a more positive light may help humanize our older population and stop ageism at its source before its effects can be felt. Moreover, the impact of these biases and stereotypes often means we group “the old” into one big fixed identity “In youth, one’s age can seem just as fixed as one’s gender and race appear to be,” it is easy for the mind to do so and undermines age as a fluid concept (Gullete 57). This idea is called age essentialism, it describes the idea of age as a fixed and unchangeable process, rather than a controllable factor that can change from individual to…

The first prejudice ageism brings is in healthcare and medicine. In hospitals, there is a "senior profiling" that happens among the staff with their patients. This generally leads to inappropriate medical care. For instance, patients over the age of 60 seem to get checked into the hospital and automatically get diagnosed with dementia. This is a huge bias among the hospital staff.…

According to Shapland (2011) Justice is defined as the quality of being righteous, fair; equitableness or moral correctness. Justice is a term that can be very tricky and many people have often and easily confused with or used interchangeably with the term fairness. In most circumstances, whether at your workplace, your school, your local pub, or in the courtroom, people want to believe that they always want to feel that they deserve and are owed to be treated fairly after being wronged. There are two different types of justice such as Restorative Justice and Retributive Justice. Restorative justice has recently become a very popular yet controversial topic. With it being such a controversial topic there have been a few key elements of the restorative justice program that have been at a longstanding debate. They key elements consist of weather restorative justice should be defined as a result or a process, whether the approach should contain some type of form of punishment, and lastly, whether the approach should contain some type or form of punishment, and lastly whether or not it should be considered as a replacement to the traditional criminal justice system or be integrated into it.…
