UNIVERSITY PROFILE

1.1 Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), was established on 18 May 1970, as the only national university in the country that uses Bahasa Melayu (Malay language) as the medium of instruction.

1.2 The main campus located in Bangi, Selangor Darul Ehsan approximately 35 kilometres from Kuala Lumpur city centre. In addition UKM also has a Medical Campus in Kuala Lumpur with four faculties: the Faculty of Medicine (Pre-clinical), Faculty of Allied Health Sciences, Faculty of Dentistry and Faculty of Pharmacy. UKM also has a Medical Centre (UKMMC) located in a 22.3 hectares area in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur. UKMMC consists of a hospital, the Faculty of Medicine and the Institute of Medical Molecular Research (UMBI).
1.3 Based on the excellence of its multi-discipline research fields for the past three decades, UKM has been chosen as one of the Research Universities in Malaysia. That position is further enhanced when a national and an international research organisation are placed in UKM, namely the Malaysia Genome Institute (MGI) and the International Institute of Global Health, United Nations University. UKM is also a recipient of the Prime Minister Quality Award 2006. The award is in recognition of its excellent achievements in the fields of academic distinction and management.     One of the reasons why my university is a good place to get an education is because they offer excellent facilities. First of all, the university has great academic facilities for the students. They have more than 120 classrooms and 15 lecture threats ready for use. The comfortable lecture theatres and classrooms that equipped with a range of other electronic teaching devices create an effective learning environment for the students. The university also provides ultra-modern laboratories that are well-equipped with the complete tools and materials for the students that are specialized in the field of science. Not only that, they also have computer and multimedia laboratories that are well-equipped with up-to-date software and hardware to facilitate teaching and learning. Besides, they have remarkable IT facilities such as computer centers with a comprehensive range of software that support teaching and learning. Furthermore, the university building is fitted with 24-hour wireless internet (Wi-Fi) access that enables the students to access to the internet anywhere and anytime in the campus easily. Next, the campus also provides complete sporting facilities such as badminton Courts, Basketball Court, Netball Court, Volleyball Court, Table Tennis Table and Olympic-sized swimming pool.     The Malaysian University English Test (MUET) is a test of English language proficiency, largely for university admissions. The test is set and run by the Malaysian Examinations Council (which also runs the Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysiaexamination) and largely recognized only in Malaysia andSingapore.Most candidates who sit for MUET do so to apply for admissions in public and private universities and colleges. MUET is a prerequisite in applying for admissions into all public universities and colleges in Malaysia as well as National University of Singapore, Nanyang Technological University andSingapore Management University. The universities set different target band scores for different courses. For instance, students who want to pursue Law would be required to obtain a Band 4 in MUET, while students who want to pursue Medicine would be required to obtain a Band 5. MUET is also compulsory for graduating from a local university. So, candidates are advised to take the MUET as soon as possible to avoid delays in their graduation.Public (government) servants also take MUET for promotion opportunities. For intance, police officers, teachers and administrative staff take MUET as an English qualification.Candidates usually have to register via their institution, private candidates with their State Education Department, with a registration fee which used to be RM 61, but has now gone up to RM 101. Candidates can register for MUET online via the mpm website. Although Malaysian government has decided to abolish government examination fees from 2007 onwards,[1] MUET will remain as a paid test.
