In the passage “The Men We Carry in Our Minds,” by Scott Russel Sanders he discusses his view on men and women. The quote above has a meaning that goes deeper than gender roles, but in this particular passage the meaning is that the way one perceives women and men is all about their experiences with women and men in their throughout their lives. The authors perception on men is different than those of the women in his class because the women in his class have fathers who hold more prestigious jobs, such as doctors and lawyers, and his father worked his way up to a job where he didn’t have to get his hands dirty. The father’s hardwork paid off when he had his higher, less demanding position, but his body gave out on him completely before he reached the age of sixty-five, as written in the passage.…

In his article “The Loss of The Creature,” Walker Percy presents the case that people or so-called “creature’s” experiences are most often trivial because of our actions. Percy believes we can only truly enjoy these experiences if we leave the old ways of thinking . Only then can we see the true beauty of the experience. Percy gives three examples to prove his point. His first example describes a tourist’s plans to go see the Grand Canyon. Oftentimes, tourists have preconceived expectations about the wonder, and feel that they are let down with a dreary sight rather than the things they have fantasized. The second example Percy uses is of a couple who, while wandering through Mexico looking for an “unspoiled” place to get lost in. They stumble upon an Indian village and live with the locals for a little while. After returning home, they tell their friends that they had an experience better than they expected. The third example Percy uses is that of a biology teacher who gave his students a dogfish to dissect. The students look at the dogfish as another specimen to be dissected for a grade instead of trying to learn about it as a piece of unexplored creation. In his article “The Loss of The Creature,” Walker Percy attempts to show how in our experiences we do not really see what we think we see. I believe he was correct, however, I did not always believe this. When I first read “The Loss of The Creature,” it did not make sense to me. After rereading it and thinking about what Percy said, I started to understand.…

In this quote, Chief Bromden says, “I been silent so long it’s going to roar out of me like floodwaters and you think the guy telling this is ranting and raving my God; you think this is too horrible to have really happened, this is too awful to be the truth! But, please. It’s still hard for me to have a clear mind thinking on it. But it’s the truth even if it didn’t happen.”(Act 1 32) Chief Bromden, a long-term patient in Nurse Ratcheds psychiatric ward, narrates the events of the novel. The novel begins as he awakes to a typical day on the ward, feeling paranoid about the nighttime activities of the wards three black aides. We are given this brainteaser from chief Bromden. The reader has already gotten a glimpse of Bromden’s paranoia, from the novels opening lines, as well as a sense that he is not seeing things from an everyday perspective. For example, Bromden describes Nurse Ratched transforming into a huge machine, and he has to be sedated when the aides try to shave him and he starts screaming, “Air Raid”. In this story, he claims himself not only the narrator, but the author. He has an important story to tell, even though it’s going to be hard for him. The last line of this quote is Bromden’s request that the reader have an open mind. His hallucinations imply that the audience shouldn’t believe everything he says in the novel. In my opinion, I believe that Bromden regains sanity, but he still witnesses many events while he is hallucinating.…

After enrolling in the Dual Credit English Composition 1 class, I was afraid of many aspects of the course. I was petrified of meaningless things: deadlines, word counts, and plagiarism. Although each of those aspects are important to consider and be mindful of, they are, in no way, anything to worry over. I lost confidence in myself and my writing, through my own frightening thoughts. Almost a full semester into the class, I know now that through hard work and careful, in depth writing that I can accomplish anything that I put my mind to. I learned that my silly fears were restraining me from accomplishing great things. I was able to overcome many obstacles pertaining to my writing, while in this class. One major obstacle that I was able to overcome and improve myself greatly on was transitioning; I ask myself, “How was I able to improve my transitioning skills in just one semester?” but the answer is quite clear: practice.…

My writing has changed a lot in my first-semester essay writing class. I finally took a class that teaches me useful information and how to properly write an essay. Essay Writing overall was a fun experience it was a slow start for me in the beginning but once I was able to get the work done I was fine. There were a lot of positives to taking this class. I started the year struggling to come up with ideas to write about nut now I can brainstorm and put my words down on the paper better than ever. “If I could travel anyplace in the world for free, I would want to go to North Korea. I would love to see what it's like.” I struggled with proper punctuation and the use of commas and such throughout my high school career and I still struggle with it I hope to learn more about it in the near future. “Cars are one of the best inventions ever.” I needed some direction on making my sentences longer with getting to the point at the same time. There's a lot of small things I need to still improve on but I feel like I got a good start with the Essay Writing course. I got a lot of useful feedback from Mrs.Pennings on all my essays like when to use certain words and proper punctuation and some compliments the really…

EN101: English Composition I, was my first college class. With mixed emotions, both excited and nervous, I knew it was important for me to do well in the course as it would set the tone for all of my upcoming classes. So, with great determination to gain new writing and reading comprehension skills (and a little apprehension), I signed up. It is no secret, even as far back as my high school English days, I never liked anything dealing with punctuation and grammar. My reading habits, over 15 years after graduation, are still fairly poor. One of the greatest accomplishments in life, however, are overcoming your fears and strengthening your weaknesses. This course, week in and week out, has helped me with both of those goals. After reading over my writing from throughout the semester and comparing it to the course tasks, it is clear that I have learned a lot. My style of writing has greatly improved and finally, after years of disdain, my views of English and writing have changed.…
