The Problem and Its Background

Introduction Cigarette smoking is now becoming a big issue through out the world and especially in the Philippines. Because of this, the researcher finds it interesting to make a research paper about it. The researcher wants to know the cause and effect of cigarette smoking amongst her fellow student in the City University of Pasay. The researcher thinks that everyone knows the side effects that the cigarette is giving to its user but the hardest thing to understand is that why do smokers still smoke regardless of its bad effects. Scientist and medical researchers says that the smoke from a cigarette contains more than 4000 chemicals, which could have various toxic, mutagenic and carcinogenic effects. The content and concentration of chemical ingredients can vary widely from one brand or type of cigarette to the next. Some of these chemicals are Methanol, Nicotine, Tar, and Vinyl Chloride. Just imagine this chemicals goes inside a human body, it will surely destroy the body slowly until that person dies. Because the number of smokers in the Philippines is tremendously increasing, the goverment have already make a move regarding this issue. They have passed a law called the sin tax bill and they think that it may be the solution in their problem.

Significance of the Study

The results of this study will encourage the readers to help and encourage their friends and loved ones to quit smoking. This research will provide them enough information that will enable them to discourage people in using cigarette. Also, the findings of this study will guide the administration in making a solution for the smokers in their university. They can establish a seminar regarding the contents and side effects of a cigarette that will make the cigarette smokers think twice wheter they will continue smoking or not.

Statement of the Problem

The following questions will be answered at the end of the research paper after the researcher gives all the informations needed to answer the questions.

1. Why do students in C.U.P get addicted to cigarette?

2. What are the reasons why smokers in C.U.P can’t stop smoking eventhough they know its side effects?

3. What are the effects of cigarette smoking in the academic performance of C.U.P students?

Hypothesis

The researcher thinks that peer pressure is one of the main reason why do students of C.U.P get addicted to cigarette. However, lack of family attention can also be one of the main reason or factor for teenagers to get into cigarette addiction.

Scope and Limits

This study covers the different reasons why do students of City University of Pasay get addicted to cigarette smoking. The different chemical content of a cigarette and other related studies about the tobacco industry. It will also include their thoughts regarding the laws that have been passed by the Goverment in line with their strong thought to minimize the number of smokers in the Philippines. Also, this research will be limited only to the ligitimate students of City University of Pasay regardless of their course and year level.

Definition of terms

Carcinogenic

• A carcinogen is any substance, radionuclide, or radiation that is an agent directly involved in causing cancer.

Cigarette

• A cigarette (from the French for "small cigar". Cigar comes, through the Spanish and Portuguese cigarro, from the Mayan siyar; "to smoke rolled tobacco leaves") is a small cylinder of finely cut tobacco leaves rolled in thin paper for smoking.

Methanol

• Methanol is the simplest alcohol, and is a light, volatile, colorless, flammable liquid with a distinctive odor very similar to, but slightly sweeter than ethanol (drinking alcohol).

Mutagenic

• In genetics, a mutagen (Latin, literally origin of change) is a physical or chemical agent that changes the genetic material, usually DNA, of an organism and thus increases the frequency of mutations above the natural background level.

Nicotine

• Nicotine is a potent parasympathomimetic alkaloid found in the nightshade family of plants (Solanaceae) that acts as a nicotinic acetylcholine receptor agonist.

Tar

• Tar is modified pitch produced primarily from the wood and roots of pine by destructive distillation under pyrolysis.

Toxic

• Toxicity is the degree to which a substance can damage an organism.

Vinyl chloride

• Vinyl chloride is the organochloride with the formula H2C:CHCl. It is also called vinyl chloride monomer, VCM or chloroethene.
