Thought Vs. Action
Hamlet is considered to be one of the most indecisive individuals in the story. He has a constant battle between himself and the thoughts surrounding him that involve the act of revenge against Claudius, his uncle. After discovering that his father died from the hands of Claudius, he has a constant conflict with himself on whether seeking revenge is the overall best option. This is tested when a ghost of his father, King Hamlet, tells him to seek revenge against his brother as he retells the story of how Claudius seduced the queen, got into his bed, and poured lethal poison in his ear. This is a turning point in the story when Hamlet is struck with the decision on whether he should avenge his father’s death. With the constant push from his father to kill Claudius, it ignites a side of Hamlet on the darkness that will soon arrive if he decides to kill his uncle. The indecisiveness that Hamlet possesses is tested in this scene. It confirms every worst fear that he ever had. Hamlet sees no other way to honor his father’s death than to murder his uncle, he becomes a prisoner of his own mind, in obligation to avenging his uncle’s death. Later on in the story, Hamlet doesn’t know whether the ghost of his father is a ghost or the devil.
