insurance an old employee may cause the company unemployment rate to increase for an older employee.
Six warning signs of ageism in the workplace are:
1. Jokes about your age - “old man,” “old lady” of the office.
2. If your company is engaged in “Force retirement “older employees are the first to go out the door.
3. Employment ads with preference – when a company has a preference for a certain age.
4. Disciplinary action – a telling sign of age discrimination all of a sudden, your performance is in questions.
5.
Exclusion from events/training if you’re not invited to special lunches, training or other company events and the younger less qualified employee are invited.
6. Hiring trends – new hires are based on youth and not the qualification.
Define individual and institutional discrimination. How do these apply to ageism?
Individual discrimination involves an individual person who is against a certain type of people based on sex, age, race and religion that go against the human right laws. Intuitional discrimination is when a group of individuals or an organization that is discriminatory such as government, banks, schools and any organization. An example of institutional discrimination that we studied earlier on in class was Tuskegee study experiment where the Tuskegee Institute for 40years period studied untreated syphilis in black men not tell them the truth of the study. Both individual and intuitional discrimination can be applied to ageism base on ages and older people who are treated in a negative way.
An example I have encountered in ageism:
The statement “he/she is so old” it too much for them to remember because they are so old. I have encountered this statement on my job by one individual who discriminated based on age. I feel it a matter of opinion and stupidity to be labeling a person
“old”.
