The first step in ethical decision making is identifying one's own value system through introspection and self-reflection (Bandman & Bandman, 1995). Individual beliefs, ideals, attitudes, and standards conform personal values through life experience. The next step is understanding the value system of others, and respecting them as equal (Yeo & Morehouse, 1996).
The Organizations also have their own value systems in the mission statements, commitment towards the community and providing quality patient care. The ANA Code of Ethics (2001) tenet 1.4, dictates that the nurse respects the patient's right to self-determination or autonomy (Burkhardt & Nathaniel, 2008). Using the Ethical Lens Inventory™and QSEN competencies tools one can determine what are their personal values.
