Examples Of Arthur Birling Speech
Arthur Birling's Speech

“Good Afternoon everyone, I am Arthur Birling, I am the owner of Birling and Co, which is a factory business company that employs girls to work on sewing machines. I was the Lord Mayor of Brumley two years ago. And I am the husband of Sybil Birling and the father of Eric and Sheila Birling. I speak as a hard-headed businessman who takes his own risks.
And I think that poor people should take their own risks as well without any help from the middle and higher class. They should be able to take care of themselves, even though they have a really low income. It is not the wealthy people's responsibility to take care of those who are less fortunate because it is not our job. The poor often work in factories where it is

Lou Gehrig was one of the best baseball players to ever play the game. He was blessed with an amazing career playing for the New York Yankees setting many major league records such as 2,130 consecutive games from 1925 to 1939. Unfortunately all good things must come to an end and on July 4, 1939 Gehrig stood before his devoted fans at Yankee Stadium and announced that he had been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. The man that was known to everyone as the "Pride of the Yankees", on this very day, showed how courageous he was by giving a passionate speech to his fans that was filled with sarcasm, emotion, and pride.…

Nervously, Mr Birling is able to take charge of the situation and continue his speech about the engagement. In this speech Mr Birling objectifies his daughter as “something good to be married to”. We know this because he addresses Gerald and regularly mentions how “She’ll (Sheila) make you happy”. At the beginning of the play Mr Birling seems to be a very happy man. His daughter is engaged to a son of a very wealthy businessman and he regards it as a joyful occasion. By allowing Eric to speak 'rudely', the audience thinks that he is an emotional type of person because he is focused at the deeper aspects of life. The gesture of raising glasses shows even clearer to the audience that Mr Birling is a caring parent and well-mannered man. However, the first impressions are often misleading. During his speech he suddenly starts to talk about 'lower costs and higher prices'. He is even involving Gerald by talking about possible fusion of his father's company and Birlings Limited. His behaviour clearly shows to audience that Mr Birling in fact is a selfish man who puts business and wealth higher in hierarchy than the happiness of his daughter.…

Priestley also conveys Mr. Birling as a pitiful social climber through what he says and his mannerisms at the start of the play. Priestley shows that Birling is aware of the people who are his social superiors, which is why he shows off about the port to Gerald, “it is exactly the same port your father gets.” He is proud that he is likely to be knighted, as this would move him even higher in the social circles. He claims that the party “is one of the happiest nights of my life.” This is not only because Sheila will be happy, but also because a merger with Crofts Limited will be good for his business. Through this Priestley presents Mr. Birling as selfish and very self-centered, showing that he only cares about himself and his business. Priestley does this to show that all capitalists were similar to Birling as they too only cared about their social status at the time.…

The Birlings are a family of wealth and power, who take pride in their high social position. Mr. Birling is a successful businessman, and the family inhabits a nice home with a maid (and likely other servants). The play begins with the family celebrating and feeling generally pleased with themselves and their fortunate circumstance. Throughout the Inspector’s investigation, however, it comes out that several of the Birlings have used their power and influence immorally, in disempowering and worsening the position of a girl from a lower class: Mr. Birling used his high professional position to force Eva Smith out of his factory when she led a faction of workers in demanding a raise; Sheila, in a bad temper, used her social status and her family’s…

As soon as they meet in act one, Birling attempts to show his social superiority to the Inspector, boasting about his contacts in the police force, this shows Birlings character and the type of person he is, big headed and boastfull. Within the play Mr and Mrs Birling seems to be the only characters that are unable to accept the fact that they helped in the death of eva smith. In contrast to Mr and Mrs Birling Sheila has total opposite views and realises what she did was wrong, and wishes that she could go back and never get Eva sacked-…

I think any child is not able to protect themselves regardless of class status or poverty, but children falling into groups belonging to low classes and poverty are even more at risk in matters not just of growth and development but of existence in general. I am glad that there are various state programs ( WIC, SNAP, Welfare and so on) which supporting families with low incomes, but in general, none of these programs can change the whole picture of poverty and the needs of such families. Reality and statistics clearly show that the chances of a child born in such an environment to grow up healthy and prosperous are extremely insignificant.…

According to the New York Post, many of the insurance premiums are targeting those individuals who can theoretically afford it. The high premiums also contribute to the high price regulations that has caused the middle class to pay more for health insurance. This implies that individuals who are financially stable are the ones who are suffering from high insurance payments and question the importance of poor lives in the sense that they can no longer pay for their own…

Birling is telling her part of the story, she refuses to take responsibility and blames others. ‘Mrs Birling: (agitated now) Oh, stop it, both of you. And please remember before you start accusing me of anything again that it wasn't I who had her turned out of her employment – which probably began it all.’ ‘Mrs Birling: ... Simply because I've done nothing wrong – and you know it.’ ‘... But I accept no blame for it at all.’ All of this shows that she is unapologetic for what she has done and accepts no responsibility for her actions. She blames others instead.…

While there is aid given to the poor by the government and many charities it is far from enough. What often happens is that the poor’s income is equal or just under what they require to meet their needs. This means that they are unable to save any money, so they are unable to move up in class and get off of welfare. They can’t save any money so if anything goes wrong if they get hurt and can’t work, if their house gets damaged, if their child gets sick, They won’t have any extra money to help them. So they will have to do without, in some cases that is impossible, or get a loan, only increasing weight of the anchor holding them in the lower class, and because they can’t get any money to save they can’t pay off the loan and it just keeps getting bigger because of interest.…

In the year 2000, 133,000 people died due to poverty in the United States. Today, almost as many people die from poverty as from lung cancer (Sanders). According to recent data, individuals in the lowest-income groups and individuals in the least-educated groups, typically experience the worst health. A 2011 report prepared for Sen. Bernie Sanders reported that individuals in the highest income group are expected to live, on average, six and a half years longer than those in the lowest income group (Sanders). Americans in poverty are more likely to struggle with a wide array of health problems than other Americans.…
