The perception that assimilation is still an inhumane procedure is not true. Assimilation today couldn’t be defined by the horrendous actions of our ancestors or by our corrupted past. Instead, assimilation should be defined on the basis of …show more content…
our current ideals and morals. If so, then how should we define assimilation in accordance to America? “The freedom to be an individual is the essence of America.” This quote, stated by Marilyn Vos Savant, encaptured the principal ideal of America.
Having the freedom to be an individual, whether it is through religion or self-interest, is one of the most highly regarded morals that many American citizens hold to heart. The moral of individuality in America encourages multiculturalism and diversity. So, assimilation in America is simply assimilation towards multiculturalism because if our principal moral encourages diversity than our definition of assimilation encaptures it. For example, immigrants entering the United States would be assimilated to American culture, which encourages multiculturalism and diversity. Therefore, these immigrants would assimilate towards
multiculturalism.
In an article written by Jonathan Haidt, the ideas of assimilation and multiculturalism were discussed. Haidt stated that in order to have cohesive moral communities, abandoning the multicultural approach to issues and embracing assimilation would be required. He emphasized that if this did not happen an authoritarian counter-reaction would emerge and cause an uproar between globalists and nationalists. So, if assimilation is favored over a multicultural approach, then does being part of a community mean becoming more alike? Although the article suggests that assimilation is better than the multicultural approach, maybe it implies that assimilation towards multiculturalism is even better.
So, becoming more alike in respecting and tolerating differences is being part of a community. Why? It is simply because over time our ideals and morals become more accepting and diverse and need to become a common aspect of all citizens. To assimilate towards multiculturalism would be the greatest victory of mankind because becoming alike in respect to diversity is peace.
